So, as usual, I’m nosy: what did you buy or borrow and enjoy this past week?
How awesome is it that Baby, I’m Yours made this list? I own the print version of the book, and bought it for that typo alone.
This week I got A Night to Surrender by Tessa Dare, The Pirate King by Laurie King, and checked out a collection of Harlequin Presents from July 2010.
I downloaded Johanna Lindsay’s Once a Princess, which came just a hair shy of surpassing my angsty hero:tstl heroine threshold. However, I also picked Jennifer Crusie’s Anyone But You, which was so wonderful, it may be my new favorite of hers.

Well, I took a break from romance this week and bought a classic mystery by Agatha Christie. Somehow I never read the very first Miss Marple mystery Murder at the Vicarage. I find old mysteries and romances set in the 20s and 30s fascinating for the everyday details that seem quaint now. Hey, mail delivery twice a day, all the home delivery of various things (not just milk), the little shop where everyone shares gossip and buys everything from stamps to food.

I bought THE CARE AND TAMING OF A ROGUE by Suzanne Enoch, and I already have BABY I’M YOURS in print. I bought LOVE FROM THE ASHES by Denise A. Agnew, RECKLESS MAGIC by Rachel Higginson, SWEET BAKLAVA by Debbie Mayne, lICENSE TO PAWN by Rick Harrison (from PAWN STARS on the HIstory channel), and a few others.
I read Snapped this week. I had it pre-ordered for my kindle and completely forgot… It was a wonderful surprise and an awesome book. I am happy to see Conner’s Way is now available on kindle, I wasn’t about to pay the small fortune that the used copy was going for.
I bought Conor’s Way by Laura Lee Guhrke and a Indie book called All That Matters by Loralee Lillibridge which was recommended by Susan Mallery on her Facebook page. I’m currently reading All That Matters because it’s seldom you find a hero that is broke, not alpha, with a bad reputation and is a mechanic all rolled into one. lol
Last week my pre-ordered copy of J.R. Ward’s Envy showed up on my nook. I gave up on the BDB books long ago—after Book 4, or was it 5?—but have enjoyed this series very much so far. It notably lacks the overwhelming amount of jargon, product placement and extraneous use of the letter H of the first one, which so traumatized me that I still find myself cringing whenever I see a black Escalade! I’m on vacation starting Wednesday and plan to read Envy while I’m getting away from it all in Florida.
I just finished Envy and yesterday I read the last Sookie Stackhouse and an old Lisa Kleypas I’d somehow missed, and also What the Librarian Did (I love Saturdays when I’ve got nothing to do). I’m in love with the Brooklyn Public Library. I don’t know if it only seems their online romance department is better than the NYPL’s because I’m newer to it, but they have so many books I’ve been dying to read. And fewer holds.
I just finished a really good, old romance novel from Samantha James called Every Wish Fulfilled. I read the prequel in an anthology and stumbled upon the sequel. The heroine has a disability and the hero is out for revenge for his family but there are hardly any TSTL or unwarranted douche-ness from the hero.
Also got a copy of Indecent Proposal, a Hollywood expose on a Columbia Pictures executive who was a con artist.
I bought Spider’s Bite by Estep and The Book of Lost Souls by Muto to read on the Nook this week. I read The Midwife’s Confession by Chamberlain and re-read some Anne Bishop. I also downloaded Great Expectations from Gutenberg.org – I think of it as a romance and re-read occasionally.
I love being able to get free, well-formatted classics from m.gutenberg.org. I use my nookcolor to go to the mobile site and download wirelessly direct to the device. I used the site this week to get The Discovery of Witches by Matthew Hopkins (1647), because I knew that was probably the source for the Deborah Harkness book title, A Discovery of Witches (which was recommended here last week, so I was thinking of checking it out, but the sample I downloaded was kind of blah). Only check out the Hopkins “non-fiction” witch-hunting account if you want to be seriously CREEPED OUT…at least it’s free.
I’ve been reading “The Search” by Nora Roberts, have had it for a while, and just picked it out of my massive book library(!!) and started reading it. I’m nearly 3/4 of the way through, and as usual per Ms. Roberts, a very good read. I’ve also been reading something that’s not romance, George R. R. Martin’s “Game Of Thrones”, which is very different, but in its way, very good. I have the second book in this series, but I honestly can’t say if I’m going to read the entire series, as the books are SO long!! I’ve been on vacation this past week and a half, so I’ve enjoyed reading and relaxing.
I read Just Desserts by Barbara Bretton and re-read Charlaine Harris’s third Harper Connelly, An Ice Cold Grave. Today, I read The Many Sins of Lord Cameron by Jennifer Ashley. NOW, I’ve started Touch of Frost by Jenifer Estep.

I’m enjoying the heck out of a new-to-me author Caroline Linden. The title is One Night in London which has absolutely zero connection to the story but said story is fabulous nonetheless. Really amazing characters that stay true to their nature with a plot that is never formulaic even when I keep expecting it to be. Very refreshing… like a junior mint.
“Archangel’s Blade” by Nalini Singh. Would’ve been Meljean Brook’s ” Demon Marked” but B&N isn’t stocking it in stores here. What a surprise. How I miss Borders.
My Visa card bled real tears this past week.
PREY by Linda Howard. More of a romantic adventure then romantic suspense. Not for the faint of heart when it comes to gore but it moved along and the main protagonists were not too stupid.
KISSING COMFORT by Jo Goodman. Sweet, smart and sexy around the edges.
ENVY by J R Ward. I like her world in this series but I still think she could use an editor who isn’t a friend or fan.
THE DRAGON WHO LOVED ME by G A Aiken. Love her. Just fan-girl love her writing and her dragon shifters.
VISCOUNT BREKENRIDGE TO THE RESCUE by Stephanie Lauren.
You’ve read this one before. By the same author. Different names.
SECOND GRAVE ON THE LEFT by Darynda Jones. I didn’t love this one as much as the first book in the series but it’s fun.
Nalini Singh’s shopping list. No, wait, the latest Archangel book. Bloody. Sexy. Great reading.
I’m reading The Scarlet Spy, by Andrea Pickens. The heroine kicks ass, the hero is likeable, and the misunderstandings are because she’s a spy and can’t let him know. Good times!
Outside of romance, read Peter Straub’s The Throat this weekend: great book, gave me seriously weird dreams.
I also read Conor’s Way by Laura Lee Guhrke (that’s the first time I think I spelled her name right). I was pretty disappointed with it. For me, it was a pretty-watered down post-Civil War romance. I’ve read books that are significantly better and you could tell this was an early effort by the author. Sigh. At least I know not to buy any of her other early works.
Just finished reading The Dragon who Loved Me by G A Aiken – lots of fun. Next on my TBR list is One Salt Sea by Seanan McGuire – I really enjoyed the previous books in the series. I am also waiting for the latest Nalini Singh and Meredith Duran books (amongst others) to become available at the library.
I have Spider’s Bite out of the library right now and am really enjoying it. I also downloaded New York to Dallas today (yay coupons!).
I read The Dragon Who Loved Me by G.A. Aiken, which was good, but I became lost in trying to remember all of the secondary characters and their past storylines. I finally gave up trying to figure it all out and just tried to muddle through. It was good, but I could have done without what seemed like every single past character from the series making an appearance. I also read the Supernatural anthology – Larissa Ione headlines it. It was a great read that continued the various author’s series, but in a less involved way. I just loved, loved, loved In Bed with a Highlander by Maya Banks. It had a couple of plot holes that would normally have annoyed me to no end, but I fell in love with the characters. They had just the right combination of backbone and total hotness, while being completely endearing. I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Up next on my reading list is Viscount Breckenridge to the Rescue by Stephanie Laurens as well as the entire Demon series from Meljean Brook – I have no idea how I have missed it in the past, but I ordered the series from B and N so I could read them in order. Now that I made this list I see why I’m behind in my homework and housework!!!!
