Nik sent this request in, and I am betting someone remembers this one, although I have never heard of a Regency hero whose hangup was that he was losing his hair.
I’m looking for an anthology that contained a story I really loved. I’m
99% sure the anthology was all Regency stories, and all the stories may have
all taken place at the same house party (or not).So, in this story, the hero and heroine meet at a house party. She’s the
daughter of a vicar or minor gentleman, and is totally a daddy’s girl. At
one point, she says she’s always hoped to marry someone very like her
father (only, you know, more her own age).
The hero is in his late 20s, I think, and going prematurely bald. He may be
an earl? Anyway, he wants to find a nice lady and settle down but he’s
super self-conscious about his incipient chrome-dome. His friend convinces
him to get a hairpiece, which he wears for the first time to the house
party. Toupee-related hijinks ensue!The heroine knows he’s wearing a rug but is too nice to say so, until he
somehow loses it in front of her and is so embarassed he hopes the earth
will open up and swallow him whole. She says it doesn’t bother her but
he’s all angst-y until she takes him to meet her beloved papa…who is
totally and completely Telly Savalas bald. Hero ditches the wig and they
live HEA.I read this story in the last 5 years or so, but my used book habit
indicates that the collection could be older. Anyone remember this story?

I think Barbara Metzger had a short story in an anthology like that. I don’t remember anything about her father, but I remember that the couple were at a ball, the stuffing she had tucked up-front tumbled out in front of everybody, so he tossed his toupee down to take the attention away from her.
