  1. Kathleen O says:

So many good books.. I have read the Diana Holquist book and I just loved it…

  2. Your Amazon link for the Diana Holquist book is misdirected… 🙂

But I’ll go find it so I can buy it!

  3. Emily says:

I don’t have a digital device. What is bonus material?
Seriously. Is it extended scenes? Out takes? Previews?

  4. Carly M. says:

@Emily: The bonus material tends to just be excerpts of upcoming books. I think it’s pretty misleading.  Some indie authors (like Julie Ortolon) will add in extended epilogues or new scenes but the big publishers tend to just have excerpts. I expect excerpts at the end of my e-books as a marketing device (and one that works well, at least according to my buying habits) but I can’t believe they call it a “bonus.”

Yes.  I totally agree with that.  Make bonus content an actual bonus and it might catch my attention.

  6. Klio says:

I don’t mind calling excerpts a bonus if they’re exceptionally long excerpts, more than are normally posted—more than you’d get via the Kindle preview option, for example. It’s convenient to get similar titles all in one download so I don’t have to hunt around. But… Yeah, even as I type that and think about it some more, I can see how that really shouldn’t be termed a bonus, based on reader expectations.

More material by the author, an interview, something about the research for historicals, maybe commentary from a modern author if it’s an older book. For graphic novels it’s simpler—bonus material can be additional drawings and character sketches. I have no idea how outtakes would work in a novel, but I’d be on board for that!

  7. Karin says:

It amazes me how long LoS continues on the top 10 list.

  8. Karin says:

For example, Tracy/Teresa Grant puts a lot of bonus stuff on her blog, such as correspondence between the characters in her books.

  9. SB Sarah says:

I usually see the “bonus material” as “the price.” I don’t go for the excerpts figuring if I want them I can get them online. But if packing excerpts in means the price is lower, I’m fine for that to be my “bonus.”

  10. SB Sarah says:

Also – @Brigid – I apologize! Link is fixed. My bad! Programming all the links is eyeball burning activity.

  11. Joykenn says:

Oh, you guys are so BAD!  Everytime I see your list I buy one or two I missed earlier.  You’re bad for my wallet!

I say let’s all give a cheer for the fantastic Loretta Chase.  Her book was great the first time around and I, unfortunately, bought it earlier at full price for my Kindle.  So nice to have one of my keepers around when I want to read it.  I LOVE that this book is getting another moment in the spotlight and probably gathering new fans along the way.

Hey, publishers, see what the best of your backfiles are capable of.  Thars gold in them thar backfiles 😉

  12. meganhwa says:

hmm looks like they have pulled the Kiss an angel promo – and i was just about to buy it 🙁 looks fun enough to pay full price for though

And i too loved the Modern Rogue story

  13. Emily says:

thank you so much for explaining bonus marterial to me!
