Fabio is New Old Spice Guy?

Many of you have emailed me with the alert that His Hair and Chesticleness, Fabio, is the new Old Spice Guy. Previous incarnations of the Old Spice Guy were the marvelously smooth Isaiah Mustafa.

Alas, Fabio doesn’t quite have the same appeal. For one thing, I can’t quite understand him. For another, there’s a totally different attitude with Fabio’s spots vs. Mustafa’s.

Here’s an example: Fabio seems to be … I have no idea what he’s doing here:

I will admit, this one made me giggle:

though the explanation suggests they’re also mocking Fabio’s use of language: “Smell the smell that is of what New Old Spice Guy Fabio has when he says Fiji.”

Huh?!

Mustafa’s style in the ads was more appealing to me:

Now, from this one, it seems Fabio is challenging Isaiah to a duel, and Mashable confirms that:

The Mashable article states that Mustafa will respond sometime around 1pm today

but I haven’t seen anything yet.

It’s up! And I totally LOL’d:

If so, I wonder – whose team are you on? Team Fabio or Team Isaiah? I’m all for the Old Old Spice Guy myself. And I also think I’ve been thinking about Old Spice a bit too much.

  1. Team Isaiah beyond a doubt.  YUM.  And he brought us an NFL season.  (Too bad a budget deal is probably beyond even HIS powers…)

Looking forward to the duel just to see what they’ve come up with.

  2. Carin says:

OK, I’m Team Grover first, then Team Isaiah second.

But I love that Fabio is willing to make fun of himself and his romance cover image.  Good for him!  And I can’t wait to see the Duel!

  3. Maria D. says:

Fabio is good for somethings but not for Old Spice…lol…I prefer Isaiah !

  4. Wanda says:

    Team Isaiah, definitely.
I did enjoy the NPH ad from a few years ago though.
The Grover one was awesome too.

  5. kkw says:

    Bruce.

  6. LG says:

Team Isaiah, no question. Fabio just doesn’t come across the right way. Plus, he’s not nearly as sexy. Isaiah could read a phone book and make it sound sexy. Actually, maybe there’s an Old Spice commercial where he has. I’ll have to hunt them all down and watch them, just to make sure. 🙂

  7. jayhjay says:

Team Isaiah! I cracked up at the “it was like an exfoliating loofah” line!

  8. Shay says:

Undecided.  Loved Isaiah, but Fabio is getting kudos for being soooo bad… he’s good.

My daughter and I have been having a field day with this:
“The Old, Old Spice guy is not handsome… And is also gross to your eyes”
imitated in the worst accent possible.

Everything in our house has been deemed “gross to your eyes”.

  9. Flo says:

I’m one for the clear underdog… go Fabio.  Isaiah is clearly hot and sexy and well spoken.  But Fabio is none of those and still makes me snort-giggle.

  10. Erin Griggs says:

Heh; my sister just texted me: “Have you SEEN Smart Bitches today?”

No, no, I had not. I needed that.

Team Old Old Spice Guy! (I hope he’s still on OS’s payroll, cause he is still helping sell it…)

    And he’s totally funnier.

  11. Barbara Elness says:

Team Isaiah all the way!  Those Fabio spots are just plain weird, creepy and he’s so totally stilted and mush mouthed, ugh.

  12. quichepup says:

Another member of Team Isaiah. Even though I associate Old Spice with my grandpa (but he was a playa way back in the day).

I want Isaiah to win because he knows the right way to issue a dueling challenge, brought back football and well, there’s just something about that voice. And the towel.

  13. Wendy says:

Fabio in these reminds me of the phrase “mutton dressed as lamb”. Yeah, he looks good for his age. Isaiah just looks GOOD. And Bruce. Oh, Bruce. Call me. Bring Jeffrey! Fwoar!

  14. Maddie says:

“I hope you’ve been well. Actually, I know you’ve been well because I’ve been watching you—and not in a creepy way. Only in public places and at appropriate times from afar like some big brother/superhero-like figure minus the biological relation, who cares about your safety deeply.”

    I LOL’ed.

  15. MarieC says:

    Team Isaiah no question!

although, if it had to be chosen, Team Grover or Team Bruce would get my vote over either one if ever came down to it!

  16. kisah says:

    Team Bruce all they way!

    Hail to the king, baby…..

though Isaiah is a close second for me….

    🙂

  17. kisah says:

    *the

    grrrr…typos….

  18. Kelly S says:

Isaiah hands down, er, ahem, my hands are open and visible, really.

Also, noon EST, guess I have lunch plans.

  19. Heidi says:

Who can’t love Fabio! Obviously, Isaiah is much younger and is in his prime, but FABIO! Remember him in the day! I think it’s fabulous that he’s able to do this, and it makes me love him even more 🙂

  20. Cat says:

Fabio is old and gross. Tired of Isaiah.  #TEAMGROVER

  21. SB Sarah says:

I’m going to be at Costco during the great showdown but RedHeadedGirl is going to recap it for me and I’ll post it here. YAY!

  22. Emily E says:

I agree on Grover and Team Monster.  But as a second choice, Team Isaiah all the way.  HE even likes LIBRARIES.

  23. Cakes says:

    Definitely Isaiah!

  24. Cakes says:

oh and second place to Neil Patrick Harris

  25. I am all over Team Isaiah but… Bruce Campbell gives him a serious run for his money and totally blows Fabio out of the water.

  26. Amy says:

Is it churlish to point out that we’re on daylight time, not standard time?

  27. velocireader says:

I vote for Bruce Campbell, there is something about his voice that is…grrrr, makes me think of yummy things. Grover is also, obviously superior…but I guess the choices are Fabio and Isaiah, and that is really no choice at all. Isaiah all the way.

  28. Chicklet says:

My money is with L.J. Gibbs, who accents his Old Spice with sawdust. *g*

  29. It has to be Isaiah – he’s hot, he gets the irony of it, his voice is deeper than the Grand Canyon. Did I mention he’s hot? Fabio is…none of the above. But his worst crime is that he’s not funny.

  30. Linda Hilton says:

Old old old lady here, remembering when Patrick Wayne was the Old Spice guy. . . . .what a smile!

And I have an old old old BF who still uses it.

  31. cbackson says:

Oh, LOL forever.  I know that the big corporations, they are toying with me with their clever advertising, but I can’t help it: I love Old Old Spice Guy.  And his rivalry with New Old Spice Guy.  I’m sorry, I’m weak and shallow and I’ll atone at the shrine of Naomi Klein.  After 9 AM PST tomorrow.

  32. delphia2000 says:

I will admit to standing in front of one of those Walmart screens for several minutes to watch ad after ad of Isaiah, but I am old enough to be his mother, so I will go with Team Fabio. I remember when Fabio was da bomb! I think he looks damn good for his age.

  33. Batty Tabby says:

Fabio is reminding me a lot of Will Ferrell, especially when he is drinking out of the straw.

  34. StarOpal says:

    Linda Hilton>

After seeing Rustler’s Rhapsody recently (say that five times fast), I gotta concur that Patrick Wayne’s smile is still quite dazzling.

  35. Karen says:

Team Isaiah, no question.  And this comes from a woman who, once upon a time, actually owned AND watched more than once, that horrible Fabio video.

  36. Team Isaiah, most definitely. I’m on dial-up right now, so I can’t see all of the video, but I do get all of the audio. Isaiah’s smooth delivery cannot be beaten. Fabio, OTOH, sounds like he’s tripping over the words. Clumsy.

  37. hechicera says:

I’m in that tiny minority that never did find Fabio attractive. His eyes are set too high in his face, like a child’s drawing.

involved89: Fabio is still involved in the world of romance, even though he’s over 89.

  38. JanLo says:

Team Isaiah. Fabio is not aging well as far a sexiness is concerned. Especially, when he pushes it. Bleah….. Isaiah fer sur.

  39. Anna Bowling says:

I like Fabio, and it’s fun to see him in these Old Spice bits, but even I have to be on Team Isaiah for this one. Boys, boys, don’t fight, you’re both pretty in your own special ways.

But seriously, Isaiah runs away with the Old Spice Guy crown. Not even close. I do give Fabio points for rolling with the punches and playing on his own image with a good sense of humor.

  40. ev says:

Team Isaiah, Team Bruce, heck even Team NPH. But Fabio is just not right for them.

My dad always wore Old Spice and I still love the smell.
