Dust off those digital reading devices, because it’s Sizzling Book Club pick time, and I’ve picked a digital novella for your reading pleasure.
This month’s pick is, I kid you not, a steampunk erotic paranormal wild west romance novella: Wilder’s Mate by Moira Rogers. I will have to re-read to see if there’s any mention of Almack’s in there because if it were also somehow Regency it would be INSANE. But I don’t think so. Unless, of course, one of the bordellos in the book is named Almack’s. I’ll have to ask the authors.
If you’ve been curious about steampunk but not sure what it is, this is a great chance to try something that isn’t book length but contains plenty of story. Here’s the synopsis: Bloodhounds, Book 1
Wilder Harding is a bloodhound, created by the Guild to hunt down and kill vampires on America’s frontier. His enhanced abilities come with a high price: on the full moon, he becomes capable of savagery beyond telling, while the new moon brings a sexual hunger that borders on madness.
Rescuing a weapons inventor from undead kidnappers is just another assignment, though one with an added complication—keeping his hands off the man’s pretty young apprentice, who insists on tagging along.
At odds with polite society, Satira’s only constant has been the aging weapons inventor who treats her like a daughter. She isn’t going to trust Wilder with Nathaniel’s life, not when the Guild might decide the old man isn’t worth saving. Besides, if there’s one thing she’s learned, it’s that brains are more important than brawn.
As the search stretches far longer than Wilder planned, he finds himself fighting against time. If Satira is still at his side when the new moon comes, nothing will stop him from claiming her. Worse, she seems all too willing. If their passion unlocks the beast inside, no one will be safe. Not even the man they’re fighting to save.
As usual, if you use SBTBARE at checkout, you will get a 50% eBook Bucks Rebate at AllRomance.com, the official sponsor of the Sizzling Book Club. The 50% rebate at AllRomance will be valid from May 1-15, 2011. Curious how to read a digital book? There’s a list of options for software to read ebooks at the ARe site, and of course there’s free apps from Amazon and BN should you wish to try those, too.
The rebate price at ARe is ridiculously awesome – $2.25 after rebate. I hope you’ll give this cross-genre novella a try, and that you’ll join us at the end of the month for the Sizzling Book Club Chat. I cannot wait to hear what you think!
How exciting! This book totally kicked ass. Moira Rogers is a total auto by for me! I’m such a dedicated
stalker
fan-girl!
Hey, does anyone in the Des Moines area want to meet up to discuss the novella in person once we’ve all read it? Email me: elizabethDOTivyATgmailDOTcom. A bricks and mortar romance book club out here would be awesome!
Oh my! This is what I love about the book clubs, I get to read stuff I would never have found or picked up on my own. And since I’m somewhat of a western geek, I’m really excited for this 😀
Scraps is right! This book was awesome! I really hope Ms. Rogers is making this a series, because I can’t wait to read more!
Whoa… I totally snagged this after reading a sample (thank you Kindle for making my crack/eBook addiction 100 times worse with sampling!) off amazon after it was recommended after reading Meljean Brooks’ The Iron Duke. I only got about 10% before being distracted by planting things.
Babble aside I’m excited I get to read with others now! Yay!
I really enjoyed this even though it is so different form her other work.
I’m a big Moira Rogers fan. Wilder’s Mate was awesome, steamy, and entertaining. Those two ladies know how to get down with their bad selves.
This sounds like it could be an amusing romp! And if it did have Almack’s in it somewhere, I would giggle. Can’t wait to read and see everyone at the book club!
I would love to participate, but I don’t have a device for ebooks. This looks like such a good story too. I love reading about vampires. Oh well!
sweetsiouxsie—You could always just read it on your computer. I did so for awhile before my loving hubby bought me my Kindle 🙂
@sweetsiouxsie – Have you considered downloading Kindle for PC? Or nook for PC? Both are free. I prefer the kindle myself, I’ve found there are more free books down the line for Kindle to be found than for Barnes and Nobles’ nook. Like Chelsea, I downloaded things to my Kindle for PC long before I actually bought a Kindle for myself. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions or anything! Hope to see you in the discussion. 🙂
Your recommendations never fail! I’ve already downlaoded the book onto my Nook and can’t wait to start! As soon as I finish The Picture of Dorian Gray… Oh, and maybe after the new Sookie Stackhouse comes out on Tuesday. I’ll squeeze it in sometime!
I have read this book. Yippee! This is a great excuse to re-read it. Great choice. I love steampunk and this book has that and the wild west. Very cool.
Sounds like a book for Moi!
I don’t know @Sadiana…I’ve found that there are tons of free Nook books out there!
Loved this book—so glad you picked it!
@ AfroQueen – nook does have a large amount of free classics, like Kindle, but most of the books I’ve gotten for free have come from/for Kindle. I tend to check Books on the Knob for free book updates, and most of them are Kindle related (at least to start). Although, nook does have that Free Book Friday thing, right?
The discount code didn’t work and I got charged $4.50.
@Sadiana – Yep…Free Book Friday! That’s how I got into the Karen Marie Moning “Fever” series.
@megaera: it’s a rebate code, so you’ll get a rebate for half of that in the form of currency to spend at ARe on other books. I hope you enjoy reading the book!
This reminded me of an LJ avatar I have, that reads “Steampunk is what happens when Goths discover the color brown.”
I haz purchased (now if I can remember to show up for the chat).
Love steampunk, love love love…
@megeara – the rebates can be a bit confusing, but if you sign in and go to “My Library” you’ll see the book you bought, plus a link to “assign bucks” (or something close to that). You click that link and then get the bucks assigned to your acount. After that the buck are available for you to use and you can see your balance at the top of your My Library page.
The only caveat is that you have to have *more* bucks than the cost of the book you want to use them on. So you can’t pay half with rebate bucks and half with paypal.
I’ve had really good experiences with customer service there, so I wouldn’t hesitate to ask them if you’re having problems. Also, besides the rebate bucks, they have a buy 10 get one free deal that’s pretty awesome. They’ll track your purchases and when you get to 10 of them your My Library page will have a code for a free book. (You must use the free book code within 10 days, but the rebate bucks have no time limit.)
Umm. Yeah. I don’t work for them, I just like good deals and they seem to be the only place offering any, so I’m a bit enamoured…
@Sadiana…..thank you for the suggestion. I’ll try it!
This is interesting.. I think I’m going to try reading this! Thanks for recommending this one!
I love the fact that this story crosses into so many different genres! Bree & Donna (AKA Moira Rogers) are among my favorite authors because they always write fab romance along with great action and fab world building 🙂 Can’t wait to read this one!
I will pick up anything that say Moira Rogers on the front! I read my first Moira Rogers book last year and have been hooked since. I LOVED this one – steampunk is also new to me, started with Soulless when it came out – I can’t wait for the second book in this series!
I agree that having a Kindle has made my book buying habit larger, but it’s okay because it doesn’t take up more space!!!!!
I LOVE everything these ladies write!!! Bree and Donna are amazing. I loved this book too. This was my first venture into steampunk and I really enjoyed it. Can’t wait for everything else they have coming this year.

If you are looking for something different to read than this is it. It is a great book. Love Moira Rogers!
