HaBO: Request for a Friend

JaneDrew wrote in looking for assistance on behalf of a friend of hers:

A friend of mine is looking for a book she read back in high school, and I told her I would pass along what she remembered to the fantastically well-read folks over at the Bitchery…

1) It was published between 2000 and 2003.
2) The book consists of two novellas, each focusing on one of two sisters.
2a) It may be classified as YA.
2b) The title might be something like “A Tale of Two Sisters,” except that searches with that title have turned up various books which are not this book.
3) It has a medieval (European) setting.
3a) The cover is done in what she described as an “older style,” with a forest in the background and the two sisters in the foreground.
4) The first story involves the older sister helping/marrying a warrior
4a) He may be in prison, possibly underground with a window, and the older sister helps him to escape
5) The second story involves the younger sister going off to find the man she’s supposed to marry
    5a) Possibly on a boat

If you could post that, it would be great! She really wants to find the book, and has tried everything she can think of to track it down.

I’ve never read anything like this one – but it sounds cool. Anyone recall this book, or set of novellas?

Is this Julie Garwood’s THE BRIDE? There’s two sisters and it’s medieval. But the cover is generic, but the second sister has her own romance and we see some of it in the book, although most of the time is spent on the heroine and hero.

  2. Barb in Maryland says:

Possibly The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine?
The plot summary doesn’t quite sound like the book you are describing, but it was the first one that sprang to mind(originally came out 2003).
Your friend’s book sounds interesting—good luck!

  3. Rebecca says:

Details aren’t quite right, but the cover suggests Patricia Wrede’s Snow White and Rose Red which is a retelling of the fairy tale involving two sisters who marry two brothers.  The older brother is “imprisoned” as a bear.  A mass market paperback with the cover you’re describing came out in 1993.  Here’s the cover: http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/0812558251/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_0?ie=UTF8&index=0

  4. Pussreboots says:

How about: Where’s my hero? by Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn and, Kinley MacGregor.

It’s three novellas. One of which is called “A Tale of Two Sisters.” Published 2003.

  5. meara says:

Could it be The Truth Teller’s Tale, by Sharon Shinn? It’s a YA in medieval times, with twin sisters. It’s one of three books in the series, and there’s some adventure and romance, but it’s been a while since I read them.

  6. Sophie Brown says:

Definitely not The Truth Teller’s Tale.  That is a YA book, but no husbands in prison OR on a boat.  But it is truly an awesome story.  Highly recommend it.

  7. anna says:

I debated mentioning these two, because it’s been a looong time, but what about Lynn Abbey’s “Unicorn and Dragon” and “The Conquest”? These were write-for-hire books, so the guy who paid her to write them retains the rights and may have re-issued the books in 2003ish. But don’t start the series if you’ve not already read them. Because it wasn’t finished. And will never be completed, according to Abbey.
