BEA 2011

BEAIt’s Book Expo America time, where publishers set up booth to tout their wares, lines form for signings featuring really awesome authors and some celebrities you might not have thought about in years, and, most of all, where people bemoan the fact that there’s about 4 bathrooms for the whole damn convention center. Ah, Javits center, I love you.

I’m doing a lot at BEA this year and I’m very excited! First, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by it all, I have two resources for you. First, BEA has a ton of conference planning tools and Publishers Lunch also has apps to help steer you around the convention. Plus, Colleen Lindsay took their raw data and made Word and Excel spreadsheets of the panels and signings.

There are three events specifically I’d like to draw your attention to, and one signing I must mention out of all the awesome signings listed in the spreadsheet above.

That’d be.. my signing. Holy Crapmonkeys, I’m signing at BEA.

Book CoverTuesday, 24 May at 10:30am in the Sourcebooks Booth, #4356, I will be signing really spiffy advance reader copies of Everything I Know About Love, I Learned From Romance Novels, which comes out 1 October.

The night before, Monday, 23 May at 6:30pm I will be doing a live in-store interview with superawesomepants author Gena Showalter at the Apple store in Soho, New York City (103 Prince Street). The interview will be about 40 minutes with time for Q&A, and will be taped for a podcast to be released later. If you’ve got ideas for questions I can ask Gena, please do leave a comment. It should be epic fun. I’ve asked for an interpretive dance version of her upcoming book Dark Taste of Rapture

On Friday, at what I think will be one of the most talked-about events of BEA this year (really! Even if I weren’t going to be part of it – this conference has received a lot of discussion among publicists and publishing types): the Book Blogger Convention. I’m giving the Keynote address beginning at 8:45, and then there’s a day of sessions about blogging, interacting with publicists, meeting authors, different sub-genres, and technology for writing online. It shalt be awesome. How do I know? One of those at the helm of organizing the conference is the supremely smart Rebecca Schinsky of The Book Lady’s Blog, and co-host of the Bookrageous Podcast which I was part of last month.

This year I’ll be attending a lot more of BEA than I have in year’s past – the past two I’ve attended for a maximum of 90 minutes, which was not nearly enough. This year is going to be very different. If you’re going, I hope you’ll stop by the signing to introduce yourself or heckle me – either one is fine by me.

Are you attending? Ooh, ooh are you signing? PIMP YOURSELF MIGHTILY! Who are you most looking forward to seeing? (And dude, I was serious about the Questions for Gena thing – any ideas for questions, let me have ‘em!)

  5. I’ll be signing at BEA this year!  🙂  I’ll be at the Harlequin booth on Tuesday from 1:00-1:45 signing Claimed by the Highland Warrior.

I’ve never been to BEA before, but will try to swing by at 10:30 to say hi!  🙂  Congrats on the new release!

  6. Sarah says:

@anony miss: I am not sure why no Kindle preorder is available. I know it will be released digitally. As soon as I know I will give you a heads up. Thank you for the attempt!

And thanks for the congrats, y’all.

  7. Kate Hewitt says:

I’m signing at the Harlequin Booth on Tuesday from 1 to 1:45 (with the lovely Michelle Willingham, as she posted above). I’ll be signing copies of my Harlequin Presents The Undoing of De Luca. I went to BEA last year and spent less than an hour there—had babysitting issues. Planning more time this year!

  8. Tara Gelsomino says:

I’ll be attending the BBC for the first time and I’m thrilled to see you’ll be the keynote speaker! Looking forward to it!

  12. Lovely!  I hope I can snag a copy….  I’ll be signing with the always fabulous Deanna Raybourn at the MWA booth at 1:15 on Wednesday.  I’ve never been to BEA before, but I’ve been warned to wear comfy shoes!

  13. K. Smith says:

I could only do one day at BEA this year and I ended up picking Tuesday, partly because of your signing. I was at BEA ‘09 & had you sign my copy of Beyond Heaving Bosoms, so I need the complete set. Looking forward to it!

  14. I commented on your giveaway thread asking if you were going to be at BEA and I’m happy to read that you are going to be there. I’m volunteering at the autographing booth so I’ll definitely be slipping away to say hi and grab a copy of your book (if I can).

I’m looking forward to meeting you and the Harlequin ladies above! SEE YOU!!

I am going to BEA for the first time, and I am PSYCHED because I am a librarian, and if there is one thing I need more of, it is FREE BOOKS.  (Not as sarcastic as it should be.)  For reals, I am excited/overwhelmed about this.  My dilemma is that I am only going for two days, and since work is paying (YAY) I need to, like, do conference stuff.  So probably no standing in line for signatures.  But I want signatures!  I want a Smart Bitch signature!  (And Lauren Willig, I see up above!  Love.)

So this is a dilemma no amount of conference planning can prepare me for.  I think.

I did, however, purchase a medium-cute pair of expensive comfort shoes for the purposes of the conference.

Anyway.  Any tips for a first-timer?  Things not to miss?

  16. BevQB says:

Sarah, have you heard that Apple will be at BEA? Yes, the company that seldom descends from its lofty cloud to attend trade shows, will be at a trade show for BOOKS! Methinks something historic is afoot.

  17. Vicki says:

This will be my fourth year at BEA so I’m going to try and relax a bit more this year and not over schedule myself.  For sure will stop by the Lauren Willig/Deanna Raybourn signing, since they are two of the nicest, most talented writers in the universe. Also, Sarah Maclean, Eloisa James and Julia Quinn are on my list, since I love them all and have not had the opportunity to meet them. And, of course, I will be all over the Sourcebooks booth hoping to snag a copy of your book, Sarah.  Congrats!

  18. Katie D. says:

I’m so excited to be going back to BEA, which I haven’t been to since it was last in Chicago 7 years ago. I’m speaking this year on the “Ebooks in Libraries” panel on Wednesday from 11 am to noon 🙂

Captcha: writing97 (how appropriate as I’ve been writing fiction since ‘97)

Oh! I found one good blog after a long time.
    Nice one.

  21. We’re BEA virgins this year also. But we’ll be there to sign our new steampunk/romance/adventure novel THE GREYFRIAR at the BEA autographing area, Table 25 on Tuesday, May 24, 10:30-11:30 EST.

And congrats to SB Sarah! I’ll be stopping by your table!
