Sizzling Book Club Pick: The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley

Book CoverIt’s not so much sizzling in northern coastal Scotland in the winter, but this book is amazing for it’s warmth, the strength of the writing, and the story-within-a-story. As I announced in the Book Club Chat last week, our April Book Club pick is Susanna Kearsley’s The Winter Sea.

Previously published in Canada as ‘Sophia’s Secret,’ and a nominee for both a RITA and a RNA award, this book is emotional, historically fascinating, rich and worth savoring. Here’s the description:

In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown.
Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next bestselling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write.
But when she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction, Carrie wonders if she might be dealing with ancestral memory, making her the only living person who knows the truth-the ultimate betrayal-that happened all those years ago, and that knowledge comes very close to destroying her…

This is what happens when romance and historical fiction are married perfectly – plus the story tells of Carrie’s present-day adventures and her character Sophia’s story a well.

As usual, if you use SBTBARE at checkout, you will get a 50% eBook Bucks Rebate at AllRomance.com, the official sponsor of the Sizzling Book Club. You can also buy a copy at Amazon.com, or Book Depository, or wherever the books in your preferred format are sold.

The 50% rebate at AllRomance will be valid from April 1-15, 2011.

I fully recognize that this is a more expensive book to be featuring, and I wouldn’t have chosen it if I didn’t truly think it was worth your reading and discussing. But to help with the sticker shock, I have five paper copies from Sourcebooks AND five digital copies (from yours truly) to give away. All you have to do is leave a comment and let me know which format you prefer. I will announce the winners and have books shipped out asap – or emailed, as the case may be. Contest is open for 24 hours.

Standard disclaimers apply: this giveaway is open to international entrants, though I’m not sure about the logistics of shipping to the International Space Station. I am not being compensated for this giveaway. Void where prohibited. Shading within a garment may occur. Use only in well-ventilated area. PC Load Letter.

I sniffled so obviously when I finished this book, Hubby was worried about me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, and can join us at the end of April (date and time TBA) to chat about it.

I already have the epub version of this book so I guess now is the time to get it loaded onto the reader and actually participate in one of these chats.  Being the covetous creature that I am though, I would love to have the gorgeous paper copy of the book.

  2. Lynne Faulknor says:

I would love a paper copy.

  3. Oo oo oo I actually have already read this, and own it in both the previous Canadian paperback release (yes folks, I made a point of looking for this book while in Vancouver!), and in ebook form from Kobo.

If this chat doesn’t conflict with Norwescon later this month I’ll totally show up!

  4. Kate says:

Interested in either format, preference for digital.

  5. Crystal says:

Sounds like a really good book.  Would love to take a look at it.

If I win (pretty please), I’m all about the digital copy.  My Kindle and I have a very close relationship.

  6. Rose says:

For those of us who won’t win a copy, I’d like to point out that on the Book Depository page Sarah linked to, there’s an option to buy the book under its original title, Sophia’s Secret – it’s cheaper that way.

One day I’ll buy a Kindle… but not today.

  7. redgirl says:

Sounds like a good read! Paper for me 🙂

  8. tracykitn says:

Count me in, please; any format is fine! Sounds excellent! (Paper would be awesome, because then if it’s really that good, I can loan it around to my best friend, my sister, my mom….)

  9. Jennifer says:

I’d love to win a copy! Either version is fine for me.

  10. Laura Burkhead says:

paper please.  Sounds like a wonderful book

  11. Elyssa Papa says:

I’ve heard so many great things about this book but never got around to buying it for one reason or another. Now I have the perfect excuse. 🙂

My word verification, btw, is physical56. I now have Olivia Newton John’s song running through my head.

  12. Lillian says:

I have an e-version.  I just want to agree with your assessment that this is a fantastic book!  I think I’m going to buy a hardcopy, just to keep!  Good luck to everyone in the contest!

  13. holly q says:

Sounds like a really dreamy sort of read. Also, wanted to note that according to the amazon version, it’s a hefty 500+ pages (is that about correct?). Not that quantity is automatically more important than quality, but it’s not like they’re charging a large sum for a 100-pager.

That said, if my name got drawn, I’d want digital, please 🙂

  14. Rene says:

I’d love a digital copy of this. Looking forward to this one.

  15. Megan says:

What is it about Scotland? Does it hold some sort of record for most romances set there?

    Digital would be lovely.

  16. Babs says:

I’d love a copy. Digital would work best for me.

  17. Emma says:

Either is fine, but I do love having the actual book in my hands 🙂

  18. Shanan says:

I would love to get an old school paper copy!

  19. Elyssa Papa says:

Oops, forgot to mention that I’d love a digital copy if selected!

This sounds like my kind of book!  I’d love to win a copy—dead tree only, please!

  21. Emily says:

    Awesome! This is so cool!
I would like a paper copy please.
I don’t have an e-read of any kind. (sorry)
    Thanks!

  22. roobarb says:

Oooo I’d love a copy.  I’d prefer paper but am thinking it’s about time I tried a digital read.

  23. Quill2006 says:

I’d love a copy!  Either format is fine, but if I have to choose, I guess I’d pick paper for its share-ability.

  24. Chelsea says:

    Would love a paper copy!

Looking forward to reading this one 😀

  25. Kelly says:

I actually would love a digital copy – something to read between correcting papers. ‘tis midterms, and reading is better for my liver than drinking. 😉

  26. crow girl says:

    I’d LOVE a paper copy.

I adored Mariana and The Shadowy Horses (the haggis!).  I noticed recently that The Winter Sea was out, but I haven’t gotten around to buying it yet.  (Trade paperbacks can get expensive—and I’ve been glomming Georgette Heyers as of late.)

    Thanks!

  27. Teri C says:

Ohh I missed the chat due to school, but I would love to win either a print, or ebook. I have heard amazing this about this book and cannot wait to discuss it.

  32. Christina B says:

Oh, this looks good! I’d prefer digital. 🙂

I love the title and the cover. Also very keen on the ancestral memory ever since I read The Sea King’s Daughter by Barbara Michaels.

  34. Darcy Burke says:

This sounds lovely and what a stirring cover. Either format works, but prefer paper. Thanks!

  35. John says:

I’d love a copy in either format.  I’ve missed out on so many great book clubs, and I recall several trusted romance recommending people telling me this was the shit and a bowl of cornflakes.  🙂

  36. Cheryl says:

What a great twist on the Scottish Highland story.  I’ll take the digital format, please.

This looks wonderful. I’d love to be entered for the ebook version. I do most of my reading on my iPad these days.
