A Taste of Romantic Times

Greetings form RT, where the bar goes dead at about 430-5 so people can get dressed up for dinner, and the party doesn’t stop until well past midnight, no matter what time zone you’re in. I heard via Twitter that there were many people in the gym this morning from the RT conference crowd. I’m betting that gym will be a little more sparsely populated in the next few days, unless running with a hangover is your thing.

I know a few people wish they were here, and I can’t say that I blame you for that feeling. I’ve been looking forward to RT for awhile, and can’t wait for the Saturday YA day, and the panels I’m giving. But for all of you who aren’t here, I have a taste of RT for you.

imageThis year, attendees get a pass to the Goody Bag Room, which is filled with books. Really, you walk in and take a deep breath, like it’s fall and someone has a wood fire burning. It’s New Book Smell, y’all. You’re allowed to select 9 books, plus a signed totebag to put them in, so off I went to build a Taste of RT giveaway package.

If you win, you’ll receive 12 books (nine from the goody room plus three additional books), including a signed ARC of The Mephisto Covenant by Trinity Faegen, romance novel trading cards, bookmarks, promo items, candy, and a selection of excerpt booklets. The books that are in the package include:

Please note: the copy of Outlander is a free promotional copy with a promo-oriented cover.

What do you have to do to win? Well, next year RT is in Chicago, and this year it’s in LA. Tell us where you think RT should be next year. Hellertown? Ellsworth? Key West? Make your case for your ideal place in the US (not like I have any control over this, obviously – this is all collective wishful thinking!) and I’ll select one winner at random to win. I have a postage-paid Priority mailbox with me, so I’ll send your items from Los Angeles as soon as I have your address.

Standard giveaway disclaimers apply: I’m not being compensated for this giveaway. Your mileage may vary. Void where prohibited. Entries valid only on website. Prune in the spring, cut down in the fall. I think Sarah MacLean’s next book should be titled “Thirteen Ways not to Hurl When Chasing an Earl.” NO! “Thirteen Ways to be a Hot Mess When Tracking Down a Marquess!”

Comments are open for just under 24 hours, and this entry is (I’m sorry!) open to US only (The postage is already paid for domestic post. Yes, I suck a lot).

Ready Set Go! Win a Taste of RT!

Washington, DC! In April, the weather is warm and the cherry blossoms are GORGEOUS.

  2. Sarah W says:

Chicago is fine by me!  I can tak the train and not worry about extra booty baggage on the way home!

  3. Nadia says:

Another vote for Fort Worth, TX.  We promise not to let it ice all over you like the ESPN people got during the Super Bowl.  We have a lovely new hotel next to the convention center.  And I will buy you a drink!

  4. Chrissy D. says:

Columbia, South Carolina! The best of small towns and big cities all in one…

    secret password: blue42
I’m 42, and I’m blue because I’ve never been to a RT conference!

  5. Melanie says:

Another vote for Boston, just because I live here, so then I could attend.

Seriously, it’s a beautiful city with lots of history, plus a convention center accessible by public transportation.

  6. I think RT should be held in Austin, TX – the capital of the GREAT state of Texas!!  You just can’t go wrong with the Texas Hill Country.

  7. CMD says:

Boston, baby! You can actually fly here without fifty zillion connections (biggest airport in New England… not like that’s saying much :P), it’s close enough to New York that you can escape to the city if you so desire (though why you’d prefer that to Boston is beyond me), it’s generally kind of nice weather-wise this time of year (except for the snow we got hammered with last week, haha), it’s chock-full of history (for those of you who are American and enjoy your history… major bonus: the very-aptly-shaped tomb of John Hancock, signer of the Declaration of Independence. It’s legend), and I could actually kind of/ maybe escape from the manacles that tie me to my bench/desk in lab to attend.

Well, I’d much prefer it somewhere nice & tropical (hello Puerto Rico, I’m looking at you… that’s still in the US. Not the continental US, but whatever)… I’d really ditch lab to combine my two favourite things: romance novels & warm-water scuba diving!

(captcha: until86… yeah, 86 more years until Harvard decides I’ve finally earnt my doctorate. Go me)

  8. Jen G. says:

Nashville, because when it’s a two-hour drive to the nearest bookstore, you appreciate any excuse to make the drive 🙂

  9. Kayla K says:

Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Las Vegas.  It’s obvious and probably overdone, but there is no shortage of entertainment and nobody looking down their noses at us unabashed romance lovers.

  10. lorenet says:

Las Vegas, NV.  Pleanty of hotels, convention space, food & drink.  Come on down!

  11. Valerie says:

I second Atlanta, GA…beautiful city, plus it would be driving distance for me!

  12. Kathy says:

San Francisco! It’s pretty, lots of attractions, lots of history and cool museums.

  13. Nicole says:

Gary, Indiana. That city needs a little love.

  14. Katie says:

I think it should be in Phoenix/Scottsdale! The valley is beautiful this time of year, and Scottsdale has some mighty swanky hotels and resorts!

  15. Jessica Dalrymple says:

Savannah is one of my favorite cities. Beaches, southern food, and history. what more do you need for romance?

  16. SharonS says:

    monkey dust,  monkey dust…pick me

  17. Robin Greene says:

New York City so I could go!

  18. Lauren says:

Fort Collins, CO! It’s cooler than Denver, more friendly than Boulder, and most importantly all I would have to do to attend is walk outside!

  19. Erin T. says:

Somewhere warm…maybe New Orleans!  All those sexy Cajuns, yum.

  20. Maggie says:

    Baltimore rocks!

  21. Tiffany D. says:

Definitely Boston so that I could go to! I would LOVE to go to an event like that 🙂

  22. Jen X says:

I’d like to see it in Philadelphia. I would SO attend if it’s in Philly.

  23. Noelle N says:

I second the nomination for St. Louis.  I’d personally love it because it would just be a hop, skip, and a jump over the river for me to get to come!  How could you go wrong with hosting a Romance convention in the “Gateway to the West”?  Plus St. Louis gets overlooked for this stuff all the time 🙁

until64:  Hopefully I won’t have to wait until I am 64 to go to a RT convention!

  24. Sadiana says:

I recommend either Santa Fe or Albuquerque, New Mexico. Come on, how could next year’s RT be anything but awesome in a state that’s nicknamed “The Land of Enchantment”? Think of the inspiration one could get out of that! (And, best part for me, it would be in my travel budget!)

  25. Lizabeth S. Tucker says:

So many cities, but I would have to say I’d love to see them come to Hoboken, New Jersey.  Because I feel it is important to expose the natives to new experiences, like books and reading and people with exotic accents like Boston and Charleston.

Seriously, I’d love to see them come back to Florida. I was unable to get off from work to visit when RT visited Orlando, so a repeat visit would be great.  Anywhere in the state would be fantastic!

drive63: I’d definitely drive 63 miles to attend.

  26. Laura says:

Indianapolis, IN – because it’s all about the love.

  27. A.R.H. says:

Why not Loveland CO? The name says it all. Granted, most of the events and hotels are located in nearby (larger) cities such as Boulder, Denver, and Fort Collins—but Loveland has the right name!

  28. Peggy P says:

Well now folks, I have to tell you about a well kept secret called Akron, Ohio. Yes, it is the butt of late night show jokes but what a special place!
See, in April the 50-70” of snow we get each year off the godforsaken Lake of the Erie come to an end and we get to the fabulous temp of 50! Not all at once of course – it can take a week or two (or four) but when that finally happens for the first time in 5 or 6 months, we go crazy and breakout the flip flops, shorts and tanks and it’s a sight to behold at the local Walmart! You gotta be here!
Also, we have hotels and buses aplenty because Akron/Canton hosts the PGA, the Football Hall of Fame and other fabulous world events. We even have an airport, CAK, which is the Akron-Canton airport but the initials are bassakwards because, well, that’s the way we roll here!

I recommend a trip here for RT because believe me, you won’t soon forget it and you will then finally understand what keeps fantasy romance alive!

  29. Morgan le Fake says:

Obviously Seattle needs some heat—I think the only way to get it is to have RT here!  Seriously, it’s a win-win for everyone!

  30. Jen B. says:

I love the suggetion of Las Vegas.  The Washington D.C. suggestion was very good.  Of course, I could say Philadelphia because it’s local to me!  But I am going to go off the rails and say either of two places
    1) Niagara Falls because so many couples have gone there to get married.  And as a bonus, it is two countries!  Very cool.
    2) Gretna Green.  I mean, seriously, how many romance novels have young couples running off to Gretna Green.  That would rock the Kasbah!
I would love to go to RT.  It sounds like a blast.

  31. SugarSpice says:

San Francisco please!!! I mean, this city is made for romance. And all types too! You can’t get more awesome than a Castro Warewolf Romance… so clearly RT needs to be here next year.

  32. Jayhjay says:

Ok I’ll be selfish and say DC bc then I’d be close enough to go!

  33. Ali says:

I recommend Toronto, it’s cosmopolitan and close to other tourist attractions.

  34. Jessica E says:

I can’t decide, but here are my top 3:

    1. Anywhere in Hawaii
    2. Austin, TX
    3. Savannah, GA

  35. Linnae says:

Since I live in the suburbs of Chicago…I am happy with that choice.  But if I had to pick a second choice, I’d vote for Denver!  I have only been to one RT and it was in Reno…had a fantastic time!

  36. April says:

I’m partial of course so I say ORLANDO!

  37. EC Spurlock says:

Atlanta! Lots of history, fantastic restaurants, lots to see and do, and we take our partying seriously. Something for everyone. We’ve already hosted RWA Nationals and they liked us so much they’re coming back.

I would also vote for Savannah; I’ve only recently discovered that city since my son attends college nearby and I was instantly captivated. Lots of atmosphere and history and the nicest people anywhere.

And I would also support Boston, which is a very cool city and still my all-time fave. Walkable, full of charm and interesting nooks and crannies. Plus, my friends and I can’t be the only writers who have ever tried to see if a body would fit in the dry-cleaning closets set in the doors of the old Park Plaza Hotel…

    capcha:eight39—um, no, you’re still on Standard Time…

  38. Overquoted says:

Lot of folks here from D/FW! (Including me.) But I vote for Denver.

  39. Lucy River says:

Come to beautiful Santa Fe, RT, where romance abounds.  I’m from Ireland, born and raised.  One wild summer, I traveled here and, BANG, met my husband to be.  We married nine months later.

There’s a spanking new convention center downtown which can cater to a crowd of thousands, sun, sand (no water to go with it though) and plenty of food, drink and atmosphere.  Need I say more?  I think not.  Santa Fe 2012.

  40. Jane Drew says:

Charleston, SC! Historic charms, beautiful downtown, excellent weather, and lots of fantastic restaurants/bars.
