Merry Christmas Kindling!

Book Cover Merry Christmas! Want a Kindle?

Since I did a straight week-plus of giveaways for Hanukkah, I figured I should have a present for you for Christmas. How about a chance to win a generation 3 Kindle? All you have to do is leave a comment and tell me your favorite gift received or given this year, and I’ll pick a winner on Sunday 26 December. Contest runs until 4am 26 December 2010 EST.

Standard disclaimers apply: I’m not being compensated for this giveaway, and I don’t secretly belong to Amazon, though if I did, I would SO be prime-able. I’d be Optimus Prime-able. Socks are recommended. If you keep making that face your face will freeze like that. I have no desire for figgy pudding, thank you.

Good luck, happy reading, and merry, merry Christmas to those celebrating today!

My favorite gift to give is going to be matching key covers tp my best friends 😀

  2. Joanna says:

Seriously? I got 31 silkie eggs for my 12-year-old daughter, and an incubator to hatch them in. Yes, I gave her unborn chickens that look like small dogs. And that’s the true meaning of Christmas.

  3. Glynis says:

I knitted my very first baby sweater and gave it to a friend for their new-born kid.

That has been my favorite gift.

  4. beeswax1 says:

My favorite gift was a Sony Ebook Reader which is the best present ever!

  5. Katie Ann says:

My mom is unique, so I got her a lockpicking kit for Christmas.  🙂  She already knows how to rekey locks, so this seemed the next logical step.

  6. Hanne says:

I got a brand spanking new MacBook Air as a combined birthday/Christmas present from my husband this year – still extatic 🙂

The favourite gift I’m giving away this year is an Atmos “Perpetual motion” clock from the1960s- it’s fully mechanical, but runs on energy from temperature changes and atmospheric pressure changes, and does not need to be wound up. Pretty cool according to a geek like me – hope he’ll like it as well!

  7. Emma Hillman says:

I gave my dad tickets to the last ever concert of Simply Red at the London O².

It took me hours to buy them online. First, the site crashed. Then, I had to leave work and realized I couldn’t keep hitting refresh every few seconds… What was I to do? Lo and behold, I copied the webpage, emailed it to myself and left to get my train. I opened the email on my BlackBerry, pulled up the page and here I went again, hitting Refresh and wondering when I’ll finally get it to load.

It worked…just before the train drove into a tunnel. I went (quietly) berserk as I stared at the page and the no 3G signal.
In the end, I asked for 3 tickets (seriously, after all this, I was going to that damn concert too!), changed trains, waited on a platform, eyes stuck to my phone, fingers at the ready. I managed to get my 3 tickets, 7th row, right in the middle.

The concert was last weekend. We left Paris by car at 6.30 that morning, got stuck 2 hours on the highway because of an accident, got the other side of the Channel, drove straight into a snowstorm, arrived in London 11 hours later. No stops, no food bar a KitKat. Fun times.

The concert was great though, and my father was very happy. Anyhow, Merry Christmas everyone! (And I love you Dad but next time you’re only getting DIY stuff or books. Just sayin’).

  8. Tina S says:

We make homemade candy every year and it’s always a blast to hand it out-we’re like Candy Elves! Everyone’s really happy to see us with our boxes or tins and it really makes my year.

  9. duckgirlie says:

This year, I gave everyone a personalised homemade tea cosy for all their uncosy teapots. Except for one friend, who got a set of espresso-cup cosies.

  10. Sycorax says:

A friend of mine wrote me a story for my birthday, based on a livejournal entry I’d made, all about fairytales and feminism and telling stories to children. 🙂

  11. Overquoted says:

Booze. No, really. A buddy of mine came to visit and bought me booze. Having a few drinks with a friend is a pretty nifty gift, if you ask me.

  12. Jenny says:

My favorite gift I’m giving this year is a hand-knitted blanket for my mom!

  13. AJane says:

Just being able to give gifts this year has been the best gift I think. That and the quesadilla maker to my brother and sil.

  14. Kaetrin says:

I’m giving a Scalextric set to my husband and son – they are both boys who love their toys and I’m looking forward to seeing their faces when they open their gift and later, when they have their first race.

    Merry Christmas everyone!

  15. MJ Fredrick says:

The favorite gift I’m giving this year is a netbook for my son. He fell in love with mine, and I’m so glad we found one for a good price for him!

  16. Pam P says:

I know one of my favorite gifts will be from my mother. Along with whatever she decided to buy, will her homemade gifts (she’s a good crafter) – could be a scarf and mittens with hat, some kind of jewelry, book covers, pocketbooks, a combo of any or all.  And always a tin of her homemade fudge.

  17. Tez Miller says:

My brother gave me headwear that looks like a huskie’s head or something. It’s so freaking adorable! 🙂

  18. Lindsey says:

My favourite gift that I’m giving away this year is a box full of bread making stuff for my Dad and his wife. They love to make things, but she’s got a condition that means it causes a ridiculous amount of pain to knead bread – So I’ve gotten a few ‘‘no knead’ bread recipe books, all the flours, yeasts, tins and extras they might need along with a pretty cool chopping board – and I made my own booklet of my favourite bread recipes too! At least one person a year gets a home made hamper style gift from me 🙂

  19. Danielle says:

The best gift that I am going to be giving this year is the FisherPrice ixl book reader to my 3 yr old son.  It reads stories and plays music.  Im getting him hooked on ereaders at an early age!

  20. Cara says:

I took a chance and got my dad a Kindle for his birthday. I wasn’t sure what his reaction would be, but he is so in love with that thing. The first one was faulty and had to be sent back and he actually pouted and haunted the tracking page waiting for his replacement.

  21. Babs says:

For Xmas, my husband bought me a gorgeous Bedouin silver bracelet while we were in Egypt—in November! I cannot wait to wear it. To be fair he said I could wear it immediately but for some reason, that just seemed wrong to me!

  22. Veronica says:

A young family member has just discovered the joys of reading, so I basically bought out Amazon this year with all the books I purchased for her. *grin* I can’t wait!

  23. I try to be a thoughtful gift giver every year, so I have a hard time picking my fav gift I’ll be giving….but if I had to choose one I think it would be the one I am giving my Dad.  I got him two things.  Neither cost alot, but I know he will love them both.  First I got him the new Brad Thor book.  He loves this author, but always waits for his books to come out in PB (like a year later) because he refuses to pay for a HC book….so I bought it for him 🙂  It’s funny though because I saw him this week and he said that HE ACTUALLY BOUGHT IT! I was shocked, but it will be funny when he opens it and I give him a hard time about buying it, when he NEVER does.
The second part of the gift is a family portrait.  He’s been wanting one of all of his kids together for years, but it never happened. This year I finally got it organized….everyone smiled and its so nice.  He’s going to love it!  I don’t think he knows about this one.

One of my favorite gifts that I got for Christmas was actually a joke gift.  My Dad thinks he’s funny…and normally we don’t exchange gifts with the adults anymore just the kids.  But a few years ago he had a package wrapped up for me, and before I even had it open he was laughing so hard that he had tears in his eyes….because inside was a real lump of coal….funny.  It gave us all a real good laugh and will be a memory I will always remember 🙂

  24. Jae Lee says:

The nicest gift I gave/got this year was lunch at Bergdorff’s. My brother and I have birthdays within a week of each other so we took ourselves/each other out. Tuna Tartare and a view of Central Park? Yes, please.
And Sarah? You are just the coolest!

  25. Kris says:

I think by far the best gift this year has been a plushie turtle – not for the turtle itself as much as for the manner of giving. We guess our gifts before opening them, and I could NOT guess. And my mom continuously gave me the hint “Shakespeare” which did nothing to help. Defeat was admitted, the gift was opened, my mom looks at the tag on the turtle and says, “Oh, his name is Slowpoke.. not Shakespeare.”

  26. Jo O says:

Favourite gift will be whatever my daughter gets for me! I have some pretty strange things over the years and some really bog standard smellies but she always so excited for me to open it and it definitely is the thought that counts.

I’ve bought her quite a bit of make-up all tucked inside a make-up bag – all items individually wrapped – all edges completely sealed, so it should take her about an hour to open it all!

  27. Meg says:

I sewed my daughter the most spectacular 1930s wardrobe for her American Girl dolls: 2 dresses a month since January. I can’t wait to see her face when she opens the trunk!

  28. ChickyBee says:

My father got diagnosed with cancer 2 months ago and was complaining how everyone had started tip-toeing around him as though he was about to drop dead any second.  So as a gag gift, I gave him a couple of wigs – a neon pink afro and long blonde braids.

His sense of humour is similar to mine and he absolutely loved them – wore the braids for the rest of the day and asked if I’d be able to find a Beatles wig for him.

  29. lmfny says:

I gave my grandmother a book of my photography.

  30. Laura (in PA) says:

I haven’t received many yet. My favorite so far is the hand-made bended and carved wood dragonfly my brother-in-law made. He’s amazing.

My favorite to give is probably the Peace purse I got for my daughter from Susan Nichole. She’s going to love it b

  31. CMD says:

Given: tickets for my mum to the latest “Cirque du Soleil” production in Canada (which coincides with my mum’s birthday), with a surprise visit from me to join her 🙂

Received: Amazon gift cards to buy loads of books. Preferably with a Kindle 🙂

    Happy holidays everyone!

  32. library addict says:

My favorite gift so far this year is the Borders gift card I got.  Such possibilities I think I’ve already spent it in my mind at least 3 or 4 times – LOL.

  33. Jessica Andersen says:

I love that I can get workshop gadgets for my Grampie, who just moved his workbench from the retirement community’s workshop to his apartment. He turns ninety-one next week. I hope I’m still fixing clocks (or my own equivalent) when I’m ninety-one! Rock on, Gramps.

  34. Alia says:

My sister. She has a 6 hour journey to visit us by public transportation, and between finals and her almost full time job in retail, we weren’t sure my boys would get to see her before Christmas morning. But yesterday my husband volunteered—out of the blue—to rent a car and pick her up. He drove four hours, helped her clean her apartment of a semester’s worth of papers (4 garbage bags!), fed her and brought her home late last night. Best Christmas Eve present!

  35. Ann Rose says:

My DH and I don’t really observe Christmas, and we have no kids, but I was able to go buy Play-Doh, crayons, coloring books and puzzles for a family in need via an office holiday effort. Best money I’ve spent in ages, and so much fun to get to be a kid again for a little while!

I’m also scheming to buy and install a padded toilet seat for a friend who told me her current seat is too hard. She’s had a tough year, health-wise, so I figure she should be able to feel like a queen when she sits on her “throne”.

Best gift to me: Tickets to see A Little Night Music on Broadway with Angela Lansbury as Madame Armfeldt, made my 40th birthday so much easier to bear. 🙂

  36. kbrum says:

a new job for me. a bike for him.
bonsai holly , bonsai fir and bonsai cumquat trees for kiddilinks.

  37. TaraL says:

My favorite gift is a Kindle we’re giving to my father-in-law. He’s been leering at mine for weeks. Today I’m going to load it up with westerns, which are his faves, to get him started. Then tomorrow, I’m going to show him how to find all the freebies that are available, which I think was really what he was leering at.

  38. Carla says:

I’m giving my husband a custom made kilt from Scotland. It’s made from the Irish county tartan where his family comes from.

  39. Tabs says:

My favorite gifts this year are incredibly nerdy.

Given:  Adorable mini Doctor Who action figures.  I’m so excited to give them!

Got: Farscape: The Complete Series on DVD.  Sexy sexy john Crichton in his tight leather pants!

  40. MicheleKS says:

My all-time favorite Christmas present was when I was thirteen and got my first typewriter. My parents knew I wanted one but I also knew how expensive they were and how tight money was so it was a total surprise for me.
