Friday Videos Wish You a Happy Hanukkah

I’ve probably linked this video before but this is my favorite Hanukkah song. There’s the Adam Sandler versions, I, II, III, and maybe IV, but this one is my absolute favorite and I wish it was played on the radio.

It’s hard to pick a favorite part. Maybe the attacking menorahs. But the BEST part is that the person who made this was making a video for the song with literally no knowledge of Jewish culture or what the song was saying, so there’s some hilarious unintentional comedy – ya mocha, for one.

Just remember, whatever you’re celebrating this month, Oy is just Yo Backwards.

BUT WAIT, there is MORE!

From Melanie G. and Darlene Marshall comes this FAN TASTIC video from the Yeshiva Maccabeats. I seriously watched it six times. And if EMI is restricting playback, try the YouTubeURL or the website of the group.

There’s no shortage of adorable dudes in that video, too. Holy smoke.

Happy Hanukkah, and have a great, festive weekend!

My best friend’s husband is Jewish; I so had to send this to him.

peace43; can it last more than 43, please?

  2. Ellie Heller says:

    LOVE those!!
But *have* to add this version of Dreidel:

    <object width=“480” height=“385”><param name=“movie” value=“http://www.youtube.com/v/wcHFukECvMo?fs=1&hl=en_US&#8221;>

    <embed src=“http://www.youtube.com/v/wcHFukECvMo?fs=1&hl=en_US&#8221; type=“application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=“always” allowfullscreen=“true” width=“480” height=“385”></embed></object>

  3. Ellie Heller says:

Dang, forgot about embedding. Well it’s Erran Baron Cohen – “Dreidel” (feat. Jules Brookes & Y-Love) . Take a look.

  4. The first song is funny and I have heard it on the radio here. This is the first time I’ve seen the video, though. And I simply must share the second with my husband (who’s Jewish.)

  5. J says:

The Maccabeats have been all over the internet w/this video – even shown on the Today Show!!  I love it – swoonworthy Yeshivah boys!!

  6. Literary Slut says:

I like the matzoh cooking on the stove!

  7. Kwana says:

I will be singing this all day. It’s great!

  8. JamiSings says:

What about Neil Diamond’s cover of Sandler’s song?

  9. Lisa Hendrix says:

Those cuties in the second vid make me want to convert. And be 21 again.

  10. Madd says:

The last video got me to thinking about how around Christmas time when I was a kid we played a game called Toma Todo. The pirinola is basically a dreidel that says things on the sides like, take one, take two, take all, put one, put two, put one, and we would play it with gold chocolate coins. Gelt? Trippy. Especially when taking in to account that buñuelos are thought to have originated with Sephardic Jews in Spain.

  11. Glad you enjoyed the Yeshiva U video. I’ve had the “Candlelight” earworm circulating in my head since I cleaned out the chanukiyot (Chanukah menorahs) this morning to get them ready for tonight’s candles.

Big improvement over yesterday’s earworm from Cee Lo.

  12. Meggrs says:

    Heeeee! Love them both!

  13. Karen H says:

Love the Maccabeats!  I’ll be humming that tune and I’m not even Jewish!  Thanks for the joy and hope you all have a good holiday, no matter which one(s) you celebrate!

  14. Kirsten says:

The Maccabeats song made my day. My mom liked it too. 🙂

  15. Elise Logan says:

Those were fabulous. I’ve been having a wonderful time listening to the NPR Hanukkah specials. Today Leonard Nimoy narrated a great special highlighting Hanukkah music and telling the story of Hanukkah. Yesterday was a series of Hanukkah themed stories that were really fantastic. My favorite is the one titled “Moon Landing” – http://www.npr.org/2010/12/01/131695975/hanukkah-lights-2010

  16. Cakes says:

    they boys are so cute!

  17. orangehands says:

    I love these all.

When I was a child we basically had “I Have a Little Dreidel” in the pop culture song department. Not to say there weren’t other Hanukkah songs, but that was basically the song sung around December to counteract all the Christmas songs.

  18. Michelle Smith says:

My favorite traditional holiday food that I look forward to every year is cream green beans. They have ac vinegar and they are delicious. I look forward to them every year.

  19. quichepup says:

I’m sending this to my pal, she will love this. Her husband is Jewish too.

  20. Carrie Kabak says:

“What the HELL are you listening to?” said my Jewish husband.

This Catholic girl likes Christmas Pudding at Christmas.

  21. Lovecow2000 says:

I heard this one on NPR a few days ago.

  22. Anne says:

I am currently in negotiation to adopt each of the Maccabeats.  Unfortunately, we are hitting a snag on the religion issue.

BTW, this site is a very bad influence on me.  I keep wondering what we can use “flip the latkes” as a euphenism for.

  23. Elise Logan says:

Lovecow 2000, that was great! thanks for sharing. I can’t believe I missed it in my NPR glut.

  24. Lori says:

I just found this video through my brother and was about to email it to you so of course, here it was. I adore these guys.

  25. aussiegirl says:

Absolutely loved these – they have made my week 🙂  I keep humming the Maccabeats one at the most oddest time and then trying to explain to all my mates who are as clueless as I am.  And they are all so cute… I just want to take them home and feed them 🙂

  26. Anony Miss says:

I’m friends with one of the mothers of one of the Maccabeats (one of the cuter ones). She says the offers for her son (to date him) are coming fast and furious. But he’s only 20, he says.

But in a couple years, ladies, I may have an in for you….
