Sony Reader: Eat, Read, Sleep

imageSony contacted me about doing a giveaway in celebration of the premiere of Eat Pray Love, which hits theatres this week. A Sony Pocket! In sexy silver! With a leather case (that is really a beautiful shade of blue on the outside) and two download codes for both of Elizabeth Gilbert’s books! Woo hoo for digital reading devices!

imageI know many of you are paper reading fanatics – which is absolutely awesome with sauce – but if you’re curious about trying digital reading but haven’t gathered all your pennies into one place to buy one, here’s a chance to win one, AND get a beautiful leather cover (can you tell I really like that blue?) with two free books.

All you have to do is leave a comment here and tell me, if you won, which book would be the first book you’d put on your Sony Reader, aside from the two free downloads? A romance? A mystery? A book on how to make your own leather Sony Reader cover with skulls and crossbones? I’ll pick one at random and announce the winner on Friday 20 August (Good Lord willing, creeks don’t rise, etc). You’ve got 48 hours to tell me which book gets to be “FIRST!” in your Reader.

Disclaimer: I’m not being compensated for this giveaway. I don’t even get the pretty blue leather cover, much as I love that color like whoa and nelly. Tie your shoes. Machine wash cold, lay flat to dry. Do not dry clean. Not available at salons. Digital ink on 100% post-consumer bytes. Melts in your mouth, not in your hand.  Not recommended for children. Prerecorded for this time zone. This broadcast has been reformatted to fit your screen. No solicitors. You can learn more about the bundle at the Sony Style store, and you can really really like Sony Readers on Facebook.

  1. If I win I will download Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. I’ve been dying to read it but I can’t stand books that don’t fit in my purse.

  2. Iris says:

I think it would be Tongues of Serpents by Naomi Novik, which was a series I discovered through this site! Or else Last Night’s Scandal by Loretta Chase. I have found so many new books and authors I like through this site, thank you!

  3. ks says:

I would love to try that.

And I would love to be able to say that the first book would be a romance, because there is a list of books that I need/want to read.  But, unfortunately, the semester is starting up and I, for some reason, thought it would be a good idea to go back to school for a PhD that I don’t really need.  So the first downloads would likely be textbooks.

  4. StephB says:

Ooh, definitely a romance, but maybe one of those anthologies of paranormal romance novellas, like Strange Brew or Burning Up, rather than a novel – that sounds like a nice “taster” way to try out a new e-reader!

  5. Tracy says:

I’m going to have to go with some tasty, brand-new Jayne Castle coming out in 14 days.  WANT!

  6. Kate L. says:

Hmm, other than those first two? That’s hard!

I would probably download Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. I can’t wait to read that final installment!

  7. Cathy says:

I want to read “Lady Isabella’s Scandalous Marriage” by Jennifer Ashley.

  8. Ellen says:

I’m in the middle of Alaya Johnson’s ‘20s vampire novel Moonshine, so that’d be a natural first.

    That is a gorgeous e-reader!

  9. Lea Anne says:

My first would be “No Mercy” by Sherrilyn Kenyon.  I have ereader apps on my phone, but would love to have one.

  10. Brooks*belle says:

I’d totally download Naked in Death by J. D. Robb.  I’ve been looking for an excuse to start that series!

Followed quickly by my 5 Must-have-if-stranded-on-a-desert-island (or stranded-in-daughter’s-weekly-Violin-&-Piano-lessons) list:
    1. Flowers from the Storm by Laura Kinsale
    2. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
    3. The Spymaster’s Lady by Joanne Bourne
    4. Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase
    5. The Shadow and the Star by Laura Kinsale

  11. Carrie Lofty says:

A powder blue e-reader would make me feel super cutting edge, which I’m really not, so I’d go with the historical romances I’m most looking forward to this fall: Jeannie Lin’s Butterfly Swords and Zoe Archer’s Scoundrel. An e-reader would be great for reading about China or Greece, but more importantly, it would be convenient if I ever went to China or Greece. Very much in keeping with the spirit of Eat, Pray, Love!

  12. Ellen says:

The excerpt from Alisons Wonderland OMG SHOE PORN!!

  13. Amanda says:

First would be A Tale of Two Demon Slayers by Angie Fox, because the waitlist for it on PaperBackSwap is very long, and I could totally see me impulse buying eBooks the way I impulse buy music on iTunes, lol.

  14. Mikou says:

If I won the Sony Reader, I’d probably 1st get Ethan Day’s At Piper’s Point (m/m romance).

  15. Chris W says:

Hmmm…  I would start getting my keeper stash digital.  Probably the JD Robb in death series.

  16. kathrynkins says:

First book would be Victoria Dahl’s A Little Bit Wild. And can I just say that cover is almost an exact match to the case I bought for my camera! Imagine if my two digital devices matched!

  17. Kristen says:

I’d download Kresley Cole’s Demon from the Dark, because those books are my paranormal crack. 🙂

  18. Katie Ann says:

Suzanne Brockman’s “Get Lucky.”  I have all the others in the series, but that is one of the one’s that’s out of print, and therefore exorbitantly expensive.  Assuming one can use Kindle files on the Sony, you can get it for $3.24.  Hells yes.

  19. KeriM says:

Boy would I love to win one of these for my husband and I, as we are both having eye-sight issues. My first download would be a romance and it would be Crusie’s Maybe This Time or Ava Gray’s Skin Heat, as I adore that series.

  20. kathybaug says:

I would first load on some books I already own.  Then I would purchase the rest of the Hunger Game Trilogy.

And since I would be giving the Sony to my husband, if you wanted to trade covers, Sarah, you COULD have the pretty blue cover

  21. JennyME says:

My first addition would be Last Night’s Scandal, by Loretta Chase. I’m on a tight budget this month and haven’t picked it up yet, but a beautiful new reader would give me an excuse to splurge. 🙂

  22. Sue says:

I’d download “Patricia Brent, Spinster” by Herbert George Jenkins.

Next, I’d locate the websites of various romance publishers and download the free category novels. I’ve been looking for an excuse to explore which ones appeal to me.

  23. Jody W. says:

I’d get the 3rd Termeraire book by Naomi Novik.

  24. Lori says:

I would probably download Mockingjay first. I’m really looking forward to it and I’m sure the waiting list at the library will be a mile long.

  25. Vlada says:

Either the next Crusie or the next Gail Carriger, or maybe That Packing for Mars book by Mary Roach, that looks funny.

  26. Jenn says:

That’s tough.  I’d probably download “Little Women” – that’s one of my comfort food books.  Next would be Jane Eyre and L.M. Montgomery’s entire bookshelf.  Are you sensing a theme?  After that, who knows.  I’ve got a trip to Germany planned in October and an e-reader would come in really handy.

“Would29” – Would 29 books suffice?  Knowing me, probably not!

  27. This would be wonderful to win! With 13 grandchildren I tend to splurge on them, not myself. This would be guilt free! lol

First download? Absolutely a Sherrilyn Kenyon. ANYTHING Kenyon!

  28. Jan says:

I’d download the In Death series by J. D. Robb if they’re available. Just like potato chips…can’t eat just one.

  29. Shelley says:

I would put Hunger Games on, followed by Catching Fire and hen I’d pre-order Mockingjay and have a Katniss reading marathon!

  30. Avrelia says:

The first will be Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal. I am dying to read it.

  31. Christina says:

It’d probably be a canning book like The Joy of Pickling. Because I spend far, far too much time canning.

Captcha is didnt78 – Didn’t I spend hours putting up 78 jars of tomatoes?

  32. Sandy D. says:

The first book I’d download would be the digital ARC of Lois McMaster Bujold’s newest Vokosigan book: Cryoburn.

Did anyone else say that yet?

  33. Lynn says:

First would be all the Vorkosigan series by Lois Bujold since I want to do a re-read before the newest Miles book (Cryoburn) comes out in October. I would also download the Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner—I saw so many recommendations for this series that I finally borrowed it from the library to read, but I think I want my own copies for keeps so I can re-read again!
Of course, then I would go crazy and download tons of romances and f/sf!
Blue is my favorite color and that is one beautiful cover.
    Lynn

  34. Jackie says:

Very very first download? And I can only pick one? Pride and Prejudice 😛 What *is* it about that book that makes me need it in every single format available?

  35. Gerd D. says:

“Lord of the Rings” would be the first book I would upload.
Probably only to find out that eReaders offer no satisfactory search function. *hah*

Don’t know how many years of my life I already wasted flipping through the pages of that book to correctly quote some of the parts I’m in love with.

  36. AJ says:

Evil, evil, evil to make me pick only one.  It would have to be Pride and Prejudice. (But in case you are wondering, next would be a Jennifer Cruise, then a Loretta Chase.)

  37. BethanyA says:

This is definitely hypothetical, since I can’t even find the book in print, but I’d love to download The Windflower by Tom and Sharon Curtis.

In reality, it would probably be something by Penelope Williamson. Perhaps The Passions of Emma?

Thank you for the contest, Bitches!

  38. Frauke says:

I’d download “Smaragdgrün”, a wonderful YA romance (with TT). It’s the third part of a trilogy and I can’t wait to know the end.

  39. Anna Piranha says:

This may sound square, but the first thing I would download would be Persuasion by Jane Austen.  It is the only Austen I have not read and I have been saving it, knowing it’s the last time I will read one of her books for the first time.  Since I am going to be 39 in a little less than a month and I’m having a leeeetle midlife crisis (This is not my beautiful house! This is not my beautiful wife!) I need the comfort that only Miss Jane Austen can provide.

validation word: past74 “I get mocked by people who were born past ‘74.”

  40. Becca says:

I think the first book I would download would be Karen Marie Monings Beyond the Highland Mists. Love me some time travel highlanders!
