Maybe This Time: A Giveaway

Maybe This TimeGiveaway on Friday? Sure, why not! I have five ARCs of Jennifer Crusie’s upcoming hardcover, “Maybe This Time,” and you can win one.

This book is Crusie’s first single-author single-title in a few years (as in, she didn’t collaborate on this one) and when the ARC arrived on my doorstep a few weeks ago, I idly started reading the first page, only to find that I’d stood at my kitchen counter reading the first chapter completely blind and deaf to everything around me. My house is loud, so this was alarming. I was sucked in immediately, and couldn’t stop reading.

I’d love to hear what you think of it before the book comes out at the end of the month. Want a copy? A sexy flexible paperback ARC?

Alls you have to do is:

1. Tell me in the comments if you believe in ghosts and why/why not. Ghost stories are totally ok to share.

2. Let me know if you review the book after you’ve read it, and where your review is (or, you can send it over to me if you don’t have your own website).

Easy, right?

You’ve got 48 hours and I’ll announce the winners on Sunday and, with luck and quick responses, start mailing the big ol’ packages Monday morning.

Standard disclaimer: I’m not being compensated for this giveaway. I will ship to international prizewinners. I will not eat them in a box. We’ve got to hold on to what we’ve got. No shirt, no shoes, no service.

  1. Jazzlet says:

I saw what appeared to me to be a young woman in a trench coat appear right in front of the car, fortunately I wasn’t driving. My friend who was saw nothing, but was startled enough by my gasp and instinctive throwing out of my hands to ask me what I’d seen.

Hah! captcha car27 it was my first, but maybe the ghosts 27th.

  2. Ellen says:

I don’t believe in ghosts.  I don’t see them when I’m completely awake, and if I believed in them I’d never sleep.

  3. Laura (in PA) says:

I do believe in ghosts, but I think it’s required if you’re Irish. I haven’t had any personal experiences, alas, but hope to someday (I think). I have, however, been places with certain feelings to them, like Gettysburg for example, that have more than a sense of history – it’s more like a sense of the souls that were part of it. My co-worker swears she has a ghost she calls Gilbert, and that her dogs and young grandchildren have seen him, by barking (the former) or talking or laughing (the latter) up the stairs to nothing. She described him to a former relative of the man who lived in her house for many years, and creeped the woman out, because her description was dead on. Even a cable guy who came to the house asked her if she had a ghost, because he felt someone behind him in the basement, and thought it was her husband, and her husband spoke to him immediately thereafter from outside.

My nephew also claims to have one in his house, who opens the basement door, and moves the rocking chairs around on the porch.

I wish I had one who would vacuum or do laundry.

    Anyway, I’m really enjoying everyone’s stories.  🙂

I love Jennie Crusie. I’m excited to hear she’s got a new book coming, and with ghosts to boot. 🙂

Oh, and I’d totally write a review and send it to you to post.

I believe in ghosts and let me tell ya why….
My friend has always insisted that her house is haunted by the previous owner, Jacob.  There has been many episodes in her house: hearing someone cough in the basement when no one was there, glasses in the cupboards being moved around, doors locked and then unlocked…you get the picture.
I stayed at her house one weeknight because my air conditioning was out.  I was alone in the house the next morning as she and her husband had already left for work.  I went into the bathroom to take a shower, and put my stack of clothes on the side of the sink, with my underwear tucked between the folds of my shirt.  (This is a habit of mine, to hide my undies in my folded shirt.)
While I was showering, I heard a soft *thump.*  I peeked out, and my clothes had been perfectly upended onto the floor, still in their folded stack.  I was like, “oh, my clothes fell, no big deal.”
I finished my shower and got out to towel off.  When I went to get dressed, my underwear was in the toilet.

I don’t have a site but I love to read books and would be happy to write a review.  I’m a good writer, I promise!

  5. Courtney says:

Sorry, make that “have been many episodes…”

  6. Pam C. says:

Jennifer Crusie is responsible for my love of romance. I used to be suck a literary snob, until I picked up a copy of Faking It from the library new books shelves years ago. Now I am a true romance junkie.

I believe in ghosts because my husband lived in a haunted house when he was a kid. It was not a nice spook, and they ended up moving out because it was getting mean pulling my mother in law around by the hair. The house has been torn down since, but to this day my mother in law wears her hair very short and when we drive by the place the house stood my husband gets weird.

  7. Lesley Robinson says:

I can’t quite bring myself to say I believe in ghosts; but I’ve had a few weird moments in otherwise deserted offices, felt cold spots in a couple of houses and seen movement out of the corner of my eye when there’s no-one home but me and the cat (who helpfully sits bolt upright and stares at the same place as I am…). Over-active imagination, anyone?

  8. Leni says:

I believe in ghosts, spirits, or whatever the official term is. I’ve read a bit on the topic and use to watch information that a medium used to discuss on her show. There are just too many things that make it plausible for me to have to wonder.

  9. SusiB says:

I’d love to get an ARC of the new Crusie book and review it!

I don’t believe in ghosts, because I’ve never experienced anything that would make me suspect they exist. I would also find it horribly scary if I did think they existed!

  10. Jo D says:

I’d love a copy of Jennifer Crusie’s new book.

I believe in ghosts and spirits.  My hairdresser was telling me about the salon’s resident ghost the other day.  She said it likes to move things around and play with the computer.

  11. Angela says:

I would LOVE to get this book!  I have really been waiting for Jennifer Crusie to put out a new novel that’s not a collaboration.  And I’m especially stoked to hear that it kept you so enthralled.

I do believe in ghosts – mainly because I’ve seen several, and have felt the evidence of even more.

  12. Kaetrin says:

I’m excited about this book!  I’ve been having a total Crusie glom on audio lately – something about her dialogue translates really well to audio I think – but it is a little embarrassing to be caught laughing out loud in public for no apparent reason!!

As to whether I believe in ghosts – I think there is a spiritual realm with angels and their evil counterparts. But, I don’t think ghosts are real – well, not the spectral kind – however, I do believe people are often haunted by ghosts of the emotional baggage kind which are just as real but different.  (make sense?)

  13. Ariana says:

I believe in ghosts, although I personally haven’t experienced them. (Although I’ve been some pretty freaky places, though.)

If I get one of the books, I’ll email you a review so you can post it on here, since I don’t have a blog for such things.

  14. Katherine says:

ohmygosh I’ve been waiting forever for a solo Jennifer Crusie to come out!
I believe that anything is possible in theory, but in practice I like to live in a bubble of denial about ghosts because the idea of them floating around watching me freaks me out!

  15. Kirsten says:

It hasn’t been quite 48 hours, so I think I’m under the deadline for this contest. I don’t believe in ghosts but I love a good ghost story.

I also LOVE Jennifer Crusie and I’m so excited she’s publishing something that’s not a collaboration!

  16. Christina says:

I can’t wait for this book to come out!  I’ve even been saving my Birthday B&N gift card specifically for August 31st.  Super glad to hear that I’m not alone in my excitement for a new solo novel.
Not to discount the experiences that so many on here have had, especially in instances connected to loved ones, but I do not believe in ghosts.  At least not in the human form walking the earth due to some celestial oversight at the reservation table of the cosmos or whatever hereafter you happen to believe in.  Having said that, something unknown lends places and things the atmosphere or vibe that they have.  Everyone has been to that house or building that just plain gives you the heebee jeebees.  And just because I don’t believe doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy a good ghost hunting TV show… just not in the dark 🙂
I don’t have a blog or website (I’m just not that internet savvy) and haven’t ever written a review before but would love to give it a try.

  17. Maribeth Curry says:

I believe in poltergeists- if you want to call them ghosts well I guess I’m in… I believe they’re disembodied spirits of people who lived there before…  There’s lots that goes on that is beyond eyesight.

I will definitely review this if I win-
I love getting emails from Smart Bitches so often- good fun!

  18. Christina says:

I do not believe in ghosts as they are labeled.  I don’t believe that people remain here.  However, I do believe there are angels and demons in the world, and those are what people call “ghosts”.
