I’ve never understood the World’s fascination with this sport. Though I thoroughly appreciate the physicality of the game.
Darn near got my lower leg broken in high school phys ed when myself and one of our schools actual soccer players kicked at the same ball. I kicked the ball hard enough it went all the way downfield…he kicked my shin. Yowza.
Good thing I’d already been doing Tae Kwon Do for a while, else that hit would have been unbearable.
But, of course, I still can’t understand the Rabid fans of most sports. Fans yes, Rabid no. (Dude, do you really have to show us your humongous belly painted in team colors at a near freezing American football game? Really?)
Soccer? Soccer? The Blackhawks won the STANLEY CUP last week, and you give us football!!?? GO HAWKS!!
You post on a blog dedicated to loving romance in a loud and proud way, but exuberant sports fanhood puzzles you?
It’s the same thing – the joy of experiencing emotion with a group. The more rabid the fanhood, the wilder the emotions run.
But, I’m a Bostonian, and we live and breathe sports fanhood here. Sports are addicting here, I think, because we so pointedly ignore each other and avoid eye contact. So the conversations between strangers and spontaneous neighborhood celebrations sports bring about are electrifying, like sneaking out of your house as a kid.
I love superfans. Enthusiasm always makes me smile and being able to smile at strangers feels so delightfully subversive.
Also, lovely goals. I miss cable and watching premier league games during the day with my Irish roommate in college. The low scores of soccer make every goal feel like lightning struck you.
Is it wrong that the soccer one reminds me of the penalty kick at the end of Bend it Like Beckham, with “Nessun dorma” as the soundtrack? (So wanted to post a link but can’t find it. Off to re-watch the movie now.)
I love the melody in the first clip. In the sixties, it was used as the theme for a French movie, Jeux Interdits, and for a Spanish movie starring Raphael. Here is a wonderful version with Spanish classical guitar player Narciso Yepes.

I love me some soccer – that last goal was insane. Couldn’t watch the US vs Slovenia game today, but I hear we were robbed. Maybe it’s karma for that crazy goal we got in the England game. Let’s just hope we actually make it out of our group this time.
Every 10 or so years I really get into the World Cup. All other times, you can’t pay me to watch soccer. Go figure.
Fandom is okay providing that the rabid fans don’t do anything too stupid, like the fans after the Lakers’ win last night or the Boston Red Sox fan who, at a party ten years ago, spat on me for mentioning the 1986 World Series. Behave, people.
That was a great Serbian goal this morning. Plus, soccer players are really hot.
