Friday Videos Love Romance and Soccer

Today we have a double-wide edition of Friday Videos. WOOTY!

First, a Spanish ballad played ragtime style – the video is a dude playing the guitar. The audio is marvy.

This gentleman also does Flamenco, and it’ll make you nod your head, no matter how you try not to.

And if you can’t get enough World Cup, here: have some joyful joyful goals:

Have a high-scoring weekend!

  1. The Mighty, the supreme King Eric.
Ah club football, the real thing. Wonderful, thank you.
If you haven’t seen it, “Looking for Eric” is a great film.

  2. The one thing I miss about 27 years of marriage to a guitar playing man is the guitar playing. This guy twangs my strings!

  3. Ros says:

    *sigh*

I thought for sure this would be a nice, safe football-free zone.  But no, it’s everywhere.  Excuse me while I go and hide in a corner with a nice pile of romance novels for the next three weeks.

  4. Elise Logan says:

The guitar vids are amazing. I love good Spanish guitar.

And those were some impressive goals. 🙂

  5. Kate Pearce says:

    Ooh Aah Cantona
What a great set of goals from long ago…

  6. Anon76 says:

I’ve never understood the World’s fascination with this sport. Though I thoroughly appreciate the physicality of the game.

Darn near got my lower leg broken in high school phys ed when myself and one of our schools actual soccer players kicked at the same ball. I kicked the ball hard enough it went all the way downfield…he kicked my shin. Yowza.

Good thing I’d already been doing Tae Kwon Do for a while, else that hit would have been unbearable.

But, of course, I still can’t understand the Rabid fans of most sports. Fans yes, Rabid no. (Dude, do you really have to show us your humongous belly painted in team colors at a near freezing American football game? Really?)

  7. Donna says:

Soccer? Soccer?  The Blackhawks won the STANLEY CUP last week, and you give us football!!?? GO HAWKS!!

  8. Ridley says:

You post on a blog dedicated to loving romance in a loud and proud way, but exuberant sports fanhood puzzles you?

It’s the same thing – the joy of experiencing emotion with a group. The more rabid the fanhood, the wilder the emotions run.

But, I’m a Bostonian, and we live and breathe sports fanhood here. Sports are addicting here, I think, because we so pointedly ignore each other and avoid eye contact. So the conversations between strangers and spontaneous neighborhood celebrations sports bring about are electrifying, like sneaking out of your house as a kid.

I love superfans. Enthusiasm always makes me smile and being able to smile at strangers feels so delightfully subversive.

Also, lovely goals. I miss cable and watching premier league games during the day with my Irish roommate in college. The low scores of soccer make every goal feel like lightning struck you.

  9. Rebecca says:

Is it wrong that the soccer one reminds me of the penalty kick at the end of Bend it Like Beckham, with “Nessun dorma” as the soundtrack?  (So wanted to post a link but can’t find it.  Off to re-watch the movie now.)

  10. azteclady says:

I love the melody in the first clip. In the sixties, it was used as the theme for a French movie, Jeux Interdits, and for a Spanish movie starring Raphael. Here is a wonderful version with Spanish classical guitar player Narciso Yepes.

  11. megalith says:

Hey, Sarah, are you a Rodrigo y Gabriela fan? If you’re not familiar with them, you should check them out.

I love me some soccer – that last goal was insane. Couldn’t watch the US vs Slovenia game today, but I hear we were robbed. Maybe it’s karma for that crazy goal we got in the England game. Let’s just hope we actually make it out of our group this time.

  12. cories says:

Every 10 or so years I really get into the World Cup.  All other times, you can’t pay me to watch soccer.  Go figure.

Fandom is okay providing that the rabid fans don’t do anything too stupid, like the fans after the Lakers’ win last night or the Boston Red Sox fan who, at a party ten years ago, spat on me for mentioning the 1986 World Series.  Behave, people.

  13. Karin says:

That was a great Serbian goal this morning. Plus, soccer players are really hot.

  14. Karin says:

And here’s a great Rodrigo Y Gabriela video.

  15. Ridley says:

Sorry, bringing ‘86 up to a Sox fan is a legitimately spittable offense.

  16. Yeah I nodded my head…. in disbelief. haha!
