Well, That’s a New One

Book CoverOK, this is so cool, I had to share:

Dorchester Publishing is thrilled to announce the signing of the Broadway musical option agreement for Leanna Renee Hieber’s The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker, a haunting tale of love and ghosts in Victorian England.

Mt. Claire Entertainment bought the novel for its musical adaptation, and Hieber, who has innate talent for invoking the Victorian era in her writing, will pen the script. Composing music and lyrics are Kenny Seymour (Broadway credits include music direction for “Memphis” and arrangements for “The Wiz”) and Nicholas Roman Lewis (creative development for “The Alchemist” and “They Call Me La Lupe”), with additional orchestrations and arrangements by Jim Abbott (“Wicked,” “Bombay Dreams,” “Disney’s Tarzan”)

Optioned for a musical?! Holy SMACK. Congrats Leanna – that is freaking awesome, right there. Optioned for a musical? Is it too much to hope that Fabio can sing?!

  1. Oh now that is awesome.  Way to go

  2. Betsy says:

    That is fabulous.
And don’t taunt me about Fabio singing.  I now desperately need to see that happen.

  3. Joanne says:

If Fabio sings then Percy and Alexi will absolutely use the line “I see dead people”.

Broadway, it ain’t just for lit-tra-ture any more!

  4. Suzanne says:

Oh I just finished reading that book yesterday and really enjoyed it!

I am wondering how its going to translate to the stage mind you… @_@

  5. rigmarole says:

Weirdly, I just got my copy in the mail today. Thank you, Book Depository! (And the ash cloud, for easing up, finally.)

  6. Kalen Hughes says:

She was talking about this on one of the loops last week. It’s so cool. I really hope I can catch it when it’s on.

  7. Kim in Hawaii says:

Congrats, Leanna!  Have fun with the Lady Jane’s Salon Road Show at RT!

Suzanne Brockmann has broken the barrier and written an off Broadway play.  So it is not too much to expect that romance novels will be optioned for musicals!

And I would enjoy hearing Fabio singing!  I met Fabio two years ago at RT/Pittsburgh.  He joined us for the SOS Military Tribute.  Because his appearance was published in the agenda, his fans packed the room.  As a result, we learned that his fans had military connections, including a reader who had just lost her son.  Fabio hugged her in comfort.

Oh, I will miss RT this week!

This book has yummy Gothic elements, and the potential for some awesome special effects.  It could be really effective on stage. I know Leanna wrote plays before she wrote the novel, and getting to adapt it herself is a big coup. I’m excited about this!

Oh, and I just got the sequel in the mail. Nice timing!

  9. ktg says:

That is awesome! I just bought this from Amazon on the recommendation of a good friend. (That and she might have mentioned that the lead male character is based on Alan Rickman…) Can’t wait to read it.

  10. Laurel says:

I’m pumped for her and hope this is a raging success. I agree about the potential for special effects. Lots of blue fire in the book…it could be gorgeous!

I liked the book so well that I broke down and ordered the dead tree version of the follow up instead of waiting for it to come to my Kindle. Which makes me very cross, but that is a totally different comment thread.

  11. Kelly L. says:

I absolutely loved this book!  It had almost every element I love.  I would kill to see this as a musical.
    Congrats Leanna!

  12. e.lee says:

wow its going to be a musical?!
Fabio? Hugh Jackman would be a great choice too

  13. Leanna’s a huge talent and I can’t wait to see how this turns out. Also looking longingly at the sequel cover (Happy Release Day, Leanna!) and counting the minutes until the kids are in bed!

  14. Thanks for posting this, Sarah, and thanks friends and Strangely Beautiful fans for your kind comments and warm regards, your words mean so much!

Regardless of what happens along the way in this difficult yet fascinating process, no matter if we get the show up or not, it’s really a thrilling prospect and I feel very blessed by this opportunity. Coming from a professional actress and playwright background, it’s strangely fitting. 🙂

I’ll be sure to keep you informed along the way, O my Smartest of Bitches!

(In the meantime I’m hard at work promoting the next book in the Strangely Beautiful series!)

    Blessings and thanks again!

  15. Chrissy says:

Woah.  Been a while since I stopped by.

Something new to add to the “impossible dreams” list!

    How freaking cool is THAT?

  16. Cathy says:

so people are ok with her lifting her hero’s name from the fan-tab-ulous Alan Rickman (who I imagine wouldn’t be caught 1000 miles from this project)? I can understand creating a character like the ones he’s played in the past, but the name too? And to honest the book wasn’t all that great…wimpy heroine and all.

  17. Huge congrats to Leanna!

The book is at the top of my TBB list. Sending you good wishes!

    Hugs,
    Tambra
