Imagine the Production Meeting on This One

So imagine you’re a producer for CTV up in Ye Olde Canada, and you have this great idea for a telenovela featuring heavy product placement with Old El Paso, featuring a beautiful woman forced to marry the richest, most evilest evil man in El Paso Viejo. And there’s a pool boy.

I think this kind of crazy fun can only happen in Canada. If someone tried to pull this off in the US, there’d be some kind of celebrity placement involving Justin Beiber or one of the homogeneous Disney starlets and it’d suck wind mighty fast.

But this? Oh, this does not suck wind! From alert reader Kathryn, who spent a LOT of time figuring out what the hell was going on here:

It seems that CTV (Canadian Television) and Old El Paso Tacos have put together a bizarre marketing gimmick that combines cheesy Latin American soap operas, Choose Your Own Adventure and tacos.  CTV claims to have a new soap opera called “Mi Marido, Mi Angel (My Husband, My Angel)” where YOU star as the beautiful woman forced to marry the evil Alejandro Los Rico, the richest man in the village of El Paso Viejo.  The site takes your Facebook information to “insert” you in the soap opera, which also stars Roberto, the Old El Paso guy as the mysterious man in white and various assorted characters including Filipe, the handsome pool boy.

The best episode is the one where you have to decide whether to help Filipe, whose shirt mysteriously keeps being blowing open by a strange wind that he proclaims his “sculpted muscles are powerful against.”

Apparently they will produce more episodes if the site gets a lot of hits!

Y’all. Y’ALL. Episode one: Felipe is indeed tormented by a terribly pesky breeze:
El Secreto Terrible, “The Terrible Secret”
Season 1,Ep. 1

Panic-stricken and fearing for his life, Felipe the handsome pool boy is being followed by a mischievous breeze. No one else at Casa Grande knows about his wretched affliction and Felipe believes you’re the only one who can help him get this terrible secret off his perfectly sculpted chest…before it’s too late!

To watch, you have to link your Facebook account into the site by clicking on the button that says “Get in on the Drama,” and then, the crazy fun begins. It pulls in – oh, just do it. It’s hilarious. Especially the one with the terrible secret. And the breeze.

OMG, that is the funniest thing EVER!

  2. Vicki says:

Where did the last half hour go….?  That is amazing and funny and a great time waster. Thanks for the link.

  3. Sarah McG says:

Just another reason why I am proud to be a Canadian!

  4. Malaia says:

And see now I want to use that in my roleplay. My character’s affliction is a nasty breeze that blows his shirt open at every opportunity!

  5. De says:

That sounds hilarious and I’d love to play.  I don’t do Facebook.

Why limit your audience like that?  I’ve never understood that.  It doesn’t make me want to join Facebook, it just makes me annoyed with your company and less likely to buy from you.  Congrats, your marketing ploy just had the reverse reaction.

  6. Catriona says:

I was also kind of disappointed that they couldn’t find a different way to do it, but since they use your profile picture, personal information and friends list in the story, I guess it was the easiest way.  It is neat, but I can understand your disappointment.  I’d feel the same way if I didn’t use Facebook (which I find annoying most of the time and would discontinue using if it wasn’t the only way my friends communicate with me these days).

Still, it might be worth setting up a dummy Facebook account with made-up info just so you don’t miss out on any of the hilarity.

That was too funny for words!  Thanks for the link!

Very funny! “It is very cold.”

  9. I simply must go check this out! Another proud Canadian here. 😛

  10. LizC says:

Hee, that was too much fun. I’m not sure “chico piscina” is really the correlate for “pool boy,” but the actors were great—totally fun expressions and hamming it up.

  11. BarbaraK says:

Do any of the rest of you fellow Canadians remember the Taster’s Choice Soap Opera ads that ran for a couple of years?

Everybody tuned in to see the last spot.

  12. Mafuane says:

Hahah XD created a fake facebook for this, as I didn’t want to share all my details but very good, looking forward to more episodes 😀

  13. Kerin says:

92% of Canadians over 18 are on Facebook.

This is the funniest damn thing I’ve seen in ages. Truly laugh out loud.

  14. DS says:

I have a friend who is on Facebook.  I have to hook her up with this.  *evil laugh*

  15. Kerin says:

Whoa, I was really distracted when I posted (family debate over gas vs electric).  92% of Canadians are online. Facebook is the leading social networking site in Canada with huge numbers in the 18-49 bracket, and 50-64 growing fast.
I work in the marketing industry here in Canada and Facebook is EVERYWHERE. I’m not surprised El Paso has chosen to use FB as a vehicle – there isn’t an agency in the country who isn’t trying to figure out how to use the medium.

I don’t know why this post has turned into a school assignment. Sorry.

As a way of describing production jobs and their responsibilities, let’s imagine a director/producer’s final production meeting.
