Silly Links

First, from Rebecca: heads up Harlequin, Harper’s Index is watching you.

One question: what’s the stat on Greek vs Sicilian tycoons?

You’ve seen why people pirate DVDs – here, have the Brads take on why DRM doesn’t work for audio books, either. Thanks to Gry for the link!

How much of a Sweet Valley High fan are you? I scored an 80% (*SOB*) on this SVH quiz. Can you beat my score?

Heck, can you resist the temptation of all those other luscious quizzes that are advertised at the end of the SVH quiz?! (thanks, Miri!)

  1. Adi says:

I got a 91% on the SVH quiz and I am…kind of depressed about that. All those useless tidbits memorized when I could have been making room in my head for measurement equivalents for baking or something. Le sigh.

  2. Stephanie says:

I bombed the SVH quiz (55%), but I rocked the Judy Blume quiz!  I remember my aunt banned my cousins from reading Judy Blume—good thing my mom never read them or she would have probably banned them too!  Is it bad that I want to get them all for my daughter?

  3. Bonnie C says:

Crap, 64%! To be honest, I don’t even remember reading Rosa’s Lie. LOL!

  4. Ana says:

aha! 55% and I never even read the books. Though I do remember watching an episode where Elizabeth takes pictures of some kidnappers, and so the kidnappers kidnap Jessica instead, and they don’t believe she has a twin sister (in the tv series they weren’t that much alike anyway). And anyone else noticed how Jessica (the evil sister) and Anastasia (the singer) look really alike?
I can’t open the “why people pirate DVDs” has it something to do with the country zone or something like that?

  5. Lydia Sharp says:

I am delurking to admit my shameful score of 73%. I used to live in those books, and read some of the spin-off novels, too.
But I was amazed by how quickly some of that came back. I honestly don’t remember reading about the band, but my mouse pointer was like, “That’s the one. Click on it. Now!” And it was right. Yowza.

  6. BevQB says:

DRM for audio books? Um, kinda-sorta, but not really.

I download audio books from Clevenet (the example The Brads use), NetLibrary, and Audible all the time and no problemo.

As for that DRM, well, all you have to do is transfer the audio book off of your PC and on to CDs (if enabled) or an MP3 player and TAH-DAH, the DRM is no more. Not a huge hassle and it allows me to listen whenever I want, particularly when an audio book becomes available from my waiting list and I’m not ready for it.

  7. Laurel says:

Wow. I could apparently have memorized the complete works of Shakespeare if I’d been reading them for fun when I was 14.

    Infinitely depressing. 73%.

On the upside, I also had an

intense English teacher at the same age…we spent a couple of weeks diagramming sentences and I can still do that, too. I use the skills acquired there a bit more than my vast knowledge of SVH trivia.

  8. Kaishai says:

    I got 100%.

Let me take a minute to gaze in horror at that number, transfixed by all it says about my life.

It’s really the 1bruce1 LJ community that’s to credit/blame, and fluke luck that two of the questions came from the only two books I still own—that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

  9. Bethanya says:

91% as well. I don’t remember any lies told by Rosa. Perhaps it was in the 40s+? After Todd came back things are fuzzy until the Cheerleader Trilogy. “Jessica Quits the Squad” was awesome. I wish I were being sarcastic, but I’m not. I just love that book!

  10. Allie says:

73% on the quiz, which isn’t too bad.  I stopped reading SVH at around number 32 when I discovered my mother’s stash of Mills and Boon novels and I’ve never looked back.  Some of those questions brought back a whole raft of lovely memories though.  I was obsessed with those books as a young teen.

  11. Lyssa says:

I wonder if Harlequin will stop with Greek Tycoons since Greece is bankrupt? Just a question. Though maybe ‘Greek Tycoon’ is a better title to have than ” The Goldman Sach employee and his Pregnant Virgin Secretary.”

    spamword girl74= Yeah I was a girl in 74…

  12. tracykitn says:

36% on SVH—it’s been a loooong time, and my access was spotty (Mom didn’t like the books, and the library was underrepresenting when it came to “recent” fiction.

I did, however, score 100% on the Big Bang Theory quotes quiz.

I’m actually kind of proud about that…

  13. Faye Gallant says:

After failing the SVH quiz, I stumbled upon this gem:

Dickens Character or Romance Novel Hottie?

    http://www.mentalfloss.com/quiz/quiz.php?q=855
    Oh joy oh joy!

night33: 33 nights with question number one, please 🙂

  14. Katherine B. says:

The DVD link points to an image that’s been removed. But I get the idea…
When teachers come back to Japan after a holiday in Thailand, with oodles of copied CDs and DVDs with copied covers (most of which work!) I’m both surprised and appalled. I have never really liked how easy it is to buy bootlegs, and how sad that that countries that are poorer seem to have them in abundance, for whatever reasons I won’t get into.
Surprised, because these teachers paid money at all. when these days sites like ISOhunt are there for your piracy convenience, to make your own DVDs if you have the knowing of it.
Of course, this was back in the days of bad internet service in Japan, only five years ago…before the Japanese noticed that the Koreans and Indians were beating their pants off with regards to connectivity and internet skills.

  15. Ana and Katherine B.:

There’s a copy of the “pirate DVD” image over at BoingBoing:
    Why pirated DVDs are better.

  16. Beki says:

73% on SVH quiz.  I don’t even recall the twins being on a soap opera…  But I did get caught in a nearly-endless loop of Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume quizzes as well, so no more mindless clicking for me today!

  17. Kelly C. says:

I got a 55% by purely guessing.  LOL, I have never read a SVH book in my life.  Although, I do believe that my youngest sister would read them if/when bored out of her mind (aka being home sick)

  18. Nadia says:

Thank you, Faye Gallant, that Dickens vs. Romance Characters was a great quiz.  Got 75%, which is better than I expected as I have not read much Dickens.  Sadly, one that I got wrong was from a romance that is one of my keepers!  The name sounded familiar, but I couldn’t place it, LOL.  Fun!

  19. orangehands says:

I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but I’m actually annoyed I only got a 45% (mostly on guessing, though for some reason Rosa’s Lie sticks in my mind, though I don’t remember actually reading the story.)

I did get an 82% on the “Curling Term or Quidditch Term?” quiz, and 100% on the “The Big Bang Theory Quote” quiz, so I didn’t do too horribly.

  20. Aphasia says:

82% and I haven’t seen a SVH in 20 years. My god- what else is rattling around in there taking up space? I also do not remember rosa or her lie- a little later maybe?
On a personal note, I’m in the middle of chemotherapy and had some worries about memory loss, but I think we can safely say that at least the trivial-ancient-history section of my mind is so far- INTACT! All right!

  21. SB Sarah says:

On a personal note, I’m in the middle of chemotherapy and had some worries about memory loss, but I think we can safely say that at least the trivial-ancient-history section of my mind is so far- INTACT! All right!

We’re here to help in all things. Hope you kick cancer’s ass. HARD.

  22. Jen D says:

91%; forgot Rosa’s secret.  I can’t decide if I’m more bummed that I forgot her secret or that I did so well.

  23. JamiSings says:

@Stephanie – Why would anyone ban Judy Blume? My mom thought the books taught great lessons and practically forced them down my throat!

  24. JamiSings says:

@Lyssa – I’m telling you, if HQ doesn’t drop the darn Greek tycoons and randy shiekhs for “The Jewish Musician’s Sexually Repressed Bride” soon I’m going to declare a coup d’état on their headquarters!

It’s time for the Jewish Musicians to get some bedroom fun, Harlequinn!
