Lorelei James and MaryJanice Davidson are doing an event together to benefit the Readiatrics Book Drive – and the ads for the event are something else. I’m totally impressed with the quality and if it weren’t such a far walk, I’d head out to Rapid City to attend.
I love the use of vintage art, especially pinup girls. I know some folks hate them, but for me, the more curvy images of women are so much more powerful now, and seem daring and subversive decades after they were originally painted. The vintage pinup girl also wears a lot more clothing than current depictions of sexualized women, and reveals how much the concept of sexy has changed, and at the same time, not changed. Now, if we can come up with some vintage pinup dudes, that would be even better. I’d have a decor motif for my office!
I feel so much better! I thought I was the only girl who liked vintage pinups! I think they are beautiful, sexy, mischievous, playful, and full of fun. Who could ask for anything more?
Another pin-up fan here. There’s a sense of fun and knowingness imbuing so many of those paintings. It’s a big contrast to the often vacant looks on current nude models and porn stars.

And I love the old pinup girls because they weren’t stick figures but real women. Smart and sexy at the same time.
I’m another one who loves the old pinup girls, both for the quality of the art (who bothers with lush, full-color paintings anymore?) and the sense of fun that Chicklet commented on. Those girls look as though they’re enjoying themselves and sharing a joke with the audience, as opposed to the expressions of pain and/or boredom that most present-day models wear. (The only thing approaching pinup dudes I can think of are the old Arrow Collar ads by Leyendecker (sp?) and some of Charles Dana Gibson’s guys.)
I like ‘em too, and agree for all the reasons stated above…they’re classy and sassy.

I too love vintage pinups. However, due to the time they were produced, it is hard to find any who are not white or extreme stereotypes of other races/ethnicities.
If you are in the market for vintage pinup dudes, you might try looking at old cigarette ads, they sometimes feature cowboys who, while never quite as provocatively posed as the pinup girls, look similarly styled. Or, you could check out Tom of Finland’s work, who was doing underground gay illustrations all through the mid- 20th C. It’s pinup art (or outright porn oftentimes) for gay guys from the same time period. His work is often very NSFW so consider yourself warned if you go googling.

A few years back I went to a lecture on pin-ups by a WWII historian. One of the really interesting things he talked about was how many soldiers (including his father) had photos of their girlfriends or wives copying the pin-ups’ poses and outfits, rather than mass-produced images. It didn’t sound like the girlfriends were considered “naughty” or anything for taking these photos.

I adore the old pinups from the 20s through the 50s. Nice to see others feel the same way. There was just something about them that delights the eye. They’re naughty, not dirty.

Jumping on the I Heart Vintage Pinups bandwagon for many of the same reasons already posted here. They’re naughty (not totally naked, they realized you don’t always have to show lots of skin to be sexy) and fun, and the women aren’t stick figures.
Count me in among those who like pinups. I think I like both the fact that they are not stick figures and the clothes. There’s some kind of magazine out there about old cars that features female models dressed up like pinups girls. I think it’s called something like Old School Rodz.
The second one cracks me up, because she’s totally wearing a “Red Hat Society” outfit. I like to imagine that she’s sassy, sexy, curvy AND over 50.
