Friday Videos Like Bluegrass

This video makes me absurdly happy: if there’s a string instrument on stage, it is PWND. By Steve Martin, Earl Scruggs, Vince Gill, and everyone on stage (except David Letterman. He doesn’t play anything).

Foggy Mountain Breakdown is some badass music. Even Wrath digs it, I hear.

Color me happy! Haven’t seen Steve Martin in a long while, and had no idea he could pick a banjo so well!

  2. Tina C. says:

Even though there are only a few Bluegrass singers that I like, I absolutely love the instrumental pieces.  That was fabulous.

  3. Laura (in PA) says:

That is awesome! I woke up very grumpy, but that perked me up considerably. Steve Martin, Earl Scruggs, Vince Gill, plus Marty Stuart, the amazing Jerry Douglas, and Dave’s own Paul Shaffer on the ivories! So cool!

  4. Mary G says:

Seeing a bunch of folks having fun together and doing something insanely well always makes me happy too 🙂

  5. earthgirl says:

I’m picturing the BDB guys square dancing to this, and it’s making me ridiculously happy.

  6. Makes me think of country fairs in the autumn.

    :o)

  7. Beki says:

Makes me miss my hometown in WV… and makes me smile.  Banjo playing is a skill and a sound like none other.

And what is it about bluegrass that’s so much more appealing than flat-out country music?  I love bluegrass but country?  Oh, not so much.

  8. Anne Calhoun says:

That was ten thousand kinds of awesome. Thanks for sharing!

  9. Marilyn says:

What a great way to start the day! A cuppa coffee and some awetastic blue grass. Takes me home!

  10. Sarah W says:

Steve Martin was on Prairie Home Companion a month or two ago.  I went back to the NPR website to listen to his performance again.  And also found him on YouTube playing for the Muppet Show.

As he said to the Muppet audience after a neat litle riff, “Hey!  This guy is good!”

  11. azteclady says:

That was delicious, just delicious. Thank you!

  12. Tracy says:

That was mega-awesome!  I’m going to have to buy some more Jerry Douglas now.

  13. Bev Stephans says:

It’s so nice to see and hear a bunch of uber-talented musicians playing well and having fun.

  14. Carrie Lofty says:

Love that they smile at each other’s solos, celebrating what they all do so well. And it’s good to see that Marty Stuart still has his big, big hair. Long live 1990!

  15. Madd says:

For someone who’s loved the banjo for so long Steve Martin had to have been so stoked to be playing on stage with Earl Scruggs. He was also on Steve’s album, The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo.

  16. Thanks for sharing!  My son plays banjo, and my next novel’s hero plays banjo also.  There’s nothing like a banjo to get your feet tapping!

  17. Kim says:

    Very cool!

I know who a lot of them are, but does anyone know the names of all the musicians? Cause some of them I didn’t recognize.

  18. kinseyholley says:

Loved it, but I’m wondering – who’s the white haired dude on the red and white guitar?

I love Marty Stuart, and not just for his fabulous hair.

  19. Librariahn says:

Wrath lurvs him some FMB because those boys are wearing the Original Shitkickers…aka Cowboy Bootz.

    *Happy Feet!!!*

  20. daisy says:

Loved it, but I’m wondering – who’s the white haired dude on the red and white guitar?

    His name is Albert Lee.

Great video – I am not much of a bluegrass fan, but that was fantastic.

  21. kinseyholley says:

Daisy – thanks!  I haven’t seen a picture of him in years and years and years.

that’s a bad ass group of musicians right there.

simply79 – I don’t think Albert Lee is close to 79, but he’s gotta be in his 60s.

  22. Melissandre says:

The string instruments were not the only thing that got PWNED.  Serious pwnage on the piano and harmonica too.

  23. micki says:

I’m so happy to see this *here*! I think I can trace my love of bluegrass to those Sesame Street snips with the little magnetic filing dude . . . does anyone else remember that?

Amazon recommended some Steve Martin to me, I got it, and it was good. But the Tony Trishka CD that they also recommended? OMG! Best commuting music ever . . . and Steve Martin also kicks ass on that album with a song he composed himself.

(-: Year of the Banjo. Or of Steve Martin. Either way, I’m happy.

  24. Suze says:

Sesame Street snips with the little magnetic filing dude . . . does anyone else remember that?

Those were AWESOME!  There were a bunch of Film Board vignettes on tv (CBC, of course, because we didn’t have cable) when I was growing up that had the same kind of animation with sand, set to music.  I wonder if it was the same people?

  25. Star Opal says:

That was great! I had forgotten that Steve Martin played the banjo, “Oh yeah, he does!”

The string instruments were not the only thing that got PWNED.  Serious pwnage on the piano and harmonica too.

The piano is a stringed instrument.

  26. CAt says:

Nothing makes me hotter than a bunch of guys plucking stringed instruments and making music – I just close my eyes and become a banjo.  Yo Steve, crackers under the bed and all that!!
