Career Aspiration, Sim Style

SomonaLass informs me that in the latest incarnation of the Sims, Sims 3, the characters can be writers. The easiest type of book to write? “Trashy” or “science fiction” (ouch!). Then you earn the skills to progress to different genres and make more money as you ascend.

Guess what’s the top of the line?

ROMANCE. I SHIT YOU NOT.

But this part, from Video Games Blogger made me curl up and giggle like a loon:

How to make easy money:

To become rich very fast by writing books, you have to take these steps.

1. Start writing novels on your computer. Write fiction novels since they take the least amount of time. But at first they won’t bring in much money.

2. When you write your skill will automatically advance. If your skill is high enough you will be able to write more novel types/genres.

3. The most money can be made from “Romance Novels”. You get royalties for 6 weeks once you finish a book.

4. With the writing skill maxed out, you can make around 40,000 every week, which is more than 34,800 you get by purchasing all neighborhood businesses and takes less time to achieve.

5. In three game weeks you should have super high-speed writing, 9 [out of[ 10 novels as best-sellers and 100,000.

Royalties six weeks once you finish a book?! 100,00 “Simoleans” weekly? Dude. How much to actually BE a Sim?

Yeah, that’s totally how it works.

  2. Kalen Hughes says:

I don’t get this . . . are they saying that people will be churning out “fake” novels so they can make fake money in SIM land?

  3. Natalie L. says:

Well, it’s not like the other career tracks are realistic—I tend to be fairly monogamous with my Sims so I only have one active game right now and she’s at the top of the science career track—as a Mad Scientist.

  4. Xay says:

I took my Sim from being a music “fan” to a hit movie score composer in about 3 Sim weeks – so no, the careers are in no way based in reality.

  5. LOL, I didn’t know that!  I got the game when it released but have been busy playing a Legacy style challenge rather than my self-Sim writer, so she hasn’t gotten high enough on the ladder to be able to write more than a Drama Novel.

I’ll have to play her again soon and increase her skill!

  6. Oh, man. I so didn’t need to know that. I managed to break the Sim habit months ago and the new version being out is tempting me unmercifully. And now this!

  7. S. W. Vaughn says:

    Must … resist … Sims … and … actually … write …

  8. Mireya says:

My Sim is a multimillionaire already.. he’s a bestselling romance novelist… yes, a HE.

    mwahahah

*off to figure out melodramatic ways to kill a Sim*

  9. Cathy says:

Oh, god, I haven’t played since Sims 1, but this is totally making me want to try out this new version.

antispam: story94 Write 94 stories, become a Simmillionare!

  10. CupK8 says:

I wish my computer could run this game…

No, actually, I don’t.  Because then I wouldn’t do anything else.  I love that Romance is the top-skill novel.  Not as easy as it looks, eh? ;D

  11. Jenns says:

Yep. One of my Sims is a romance writer.

I am so addicted to 2, and now 3.

  12. Jessa Slade says:

Wait, “trashy” is the easiest and “romance” is the pinnacle?

  13. Elayna says:

I love Sims 3, but as with all the Sims game I completely over use the money cheat 🙂

What?  I could play it properly?  Never occurred to me!

  14. Becca says:

Is Sims 3 backward compatible with all those add-on units from Sims 2?

  15. Emeline says:

Becca: That would be how so great but wouldn’t make them lots of money.
No, we’ll gain back the functionalities we gained with the addons in the second version when they churn out new addons for the third.

  16. MichelleR says:

I don’t see a mention of the fact that sims with the trait “hopeless romantic” like to read “trashy” romances. I’m not sure that’s a direct quote, but pretty close.

  17. LadyRhian says:

Nah, a “Hopeless Romantic” Sim is better at writing Romance Novels. Flirty Sims write better trashy Novels. I have a Sim who is a writer, and she is working on her second Romance, “Paranormal Romance Heat”. She’s also written “Baguette: Food or Weapon?”, “Bimbos of the Death Sun”, “Zombies of the Gene Pool” (What can I say, I’m a sucker for self-referential stuff) “Finding Jay Omega” and “Rescuing Princess Kaylynn” since the last was a fantasy novel written at the behest of Kaylynn Langerak, one of the Sim Families in-game. Her other Romance was “Love’s Savage Destiny”, and I was waiting for a notification to come up that it was plaigiarized material. 😉

  18. Madd says:

Dude. How much to actually BE a Sim?

But then you’d have to worry about stair disappearing from your pool or a slew of wooden chairs suddenly appearing in front of your fireplace as your doors disappear.

  19. Peyton says:

I LOVE that the Bitches play Sims too! Currently, my Sim is a power broker with 7 books published. No romances yet…but soon! Gotta like the details that the creators of Sims put into their product.

Wait, “trashy” is the easiest and “romance” is the pinnacle?

well…. ‘trashy’ can be applied to a lot of things.  I generally interpret that to mean cheap, done in a quick and inexpert manner, and more focused on perceived style and cool rather than skill/quality.    You can have trashy outfits, trashy curtains, trashy women ( for the first and third, refer to many episodes of Jerry Springer), and trashy writing – ie, all about scandals, illegalities, sex and violence (and not even done very well!).

Not a story about emotions and relationships, but OMG! Look who got caught in bed with someone else’s hubby! an’ there’s a lawsuit and look at those awful clothes and now the ex is alleging abuse an’ someone wrecked their car an’ there’s a pregnant ex in the picture demanding child support as soon as they figure out who’s the baby-daddy, an….  you know, trashy.  Like the Star (available at grocery store checkout lanes across America!)

or trashy – the badly done detective lured in by the slinky moll, shot at by gangsters, managing to pull through the mass of cliches and gunfire by the skin of his hard boiled detective teeth and a bit of luck…

or many of the (fill in the blank)-sploitation films done in the 70’s… trashy.  And I don’t just mean the wardrobes.

There are trashy romances.  There are also trashy western/mystery/biographical/fantasy/thriller/crime/anything else sort of books.  Trashy means ineptly/quickly done, focused more on thrills and gimmicks than quality writing.

now if only a computer game could translate to getting a book out on the market….  I’d be in line for that so fast someone’d get whiplash.
