Pre-Bitch hangouts for the Tukwila reading tomorrow and the Boise reading on Friday?

So I’m planning to head to the Great Gray North a bit early tomorrow to avoid the nasty nasty clusterfuckage that is Seattle Metro Area rush hour traffic, and I’m planning to be at the Barnes and Noble by around 3 or 4 p.m.—which means I have 3 hours to kill. Any suggestions for interesting things I can do there? Please note that I am a) very easily amused, and b) sitting on my ass reading and internetting totally counts as an awesome time (especially since I’m still recovering from finals, and am eyeing my stack of delicious trashy novels with beady-eyed intent).

Same with the Boise reading—I’ll probably be hittin’ Boise some time Thursday night, and will be looking for Cool Things To Do in the area all Friday until my reading 7 p.m. at Rediscovered Books. Any suggestions?

Have I mentioned how much I’m looking forward to this readings? Because FUCK YEAH DUDES it’s going to be plein d’awesome, avec un side dish de SAVAGE.

Well, the Tukwila B&N is a couple blocks away from a ginormous mall (Southcenter) if you want to gawk at the locals.  You could also easily grab a bus (check transit.metrokc.gov for schedules and trip-planning) to downtown Seattle and nose around (hint hint Elliot Bay Bookstore OMG SWOON).  Weather has been weird here—it either looks like it’s about to rain like hell, or it’s bright and sunny.  We haven’t gotten an in-between in days.

There’s also a Half-Price Books in Tukwila, probably 1/2 mile from the B&N.

Can’t wait to be there! (captcha: trying57, yeah, I’ll be trying to make it down there from Capitol Hill in 30 minutes tomorrow night!)

  2. Mary says:

Let’s not forget that the south parking lot of Southcenter also houses The Cheesecake Factory.  Why not drive over and partake of some food porn?

  3. Kim says:

Aw, c’mon, the Cheesecake Factory is less than five blocks from the B&N.  Very easy to walk!

  4. Woohoo! I’ll be driving up from Olytown, probably getting stuck in traffic. May be late, so don’t have too much fun before I get there! Oh yeah, getting my Bosoms on (lol)

  5. Tukwila? They should name a drink after that!

  6. Rachel says:

For Boise, I’ll have to work, but if you have a car you can head downtown! Downtown has a lot of coffee shops, cafes and bars. I have to recommend Thomas Hammer Coffee because it’s where I work and we have excellent coffee!

I don’t know if you can do the distance within 3 hours, but has anyone ever mentioned McDonald’s Book Exchange here before?  I believe it’s still in business (haven’t been there myself in a few years, as I live in Canada) … it’s at 16415 N.E. 83rd Street in Redmond, WA … last number I had on the place was 425-885-4773.

It’s an old house that was converted into a used book store.  They have a ton of interesting and inexpensive books AND they have a massive romance book section so if you love books that have shirtless Italian men carrying women through a field of grapes, this is your place. ;p (I “borrowed” that quote off a review site of the store; it pretty much sums up the place!)

McDonald’s Book Exchange- yeah it’s still there. I love that store. They have such a great collection of romance novels. And they have the best selection of very rare romances at a really good price. I found Windflower there a few months ago for $5, compared to like $40-$50 on Amazon. They have an entire back room for hard to find books and another room just for category books.

I wish I could be at the book reading tomorrow! But I’m in the middle of midterms and can’t do anything fun right now.

  9. rebyj says:

I could never/would never write a book, you bitches gotta work too hard now that it’s released and well, I’m lazy! lol

Have a great time! Sounds like that McDonald’s Book Exchange is a must see. Go spend some of that royalty money!

Since you’ll be in Boise for breakfast, you can’t miss Goldy’s Breakfast Bistro.  The sweet potato hashbrowns are NOT to be missed!  Here’s a blurb…  Goldy’s Breakfast Bistro

I’ve lived in Boise for three years and have never heard of/seen Rediscovered Books.  How sad is that?

    108 S Capitol Blvd
    Boise, ID 83702

It serves the best breakfasts ever. I love the red flannel hash, but everything is good.

You should post the address and website of Rediscovered books

I just realized that I will be in Boise Friday. I will try to get to the signing.

  15. SandyO says:

In Boise, you need to check out Rainbow Books, a very romance friendly USB.  If you’re downtown, I second Goldy’s for breakfast.  Also, Moon’s (killer milk shakes) or Donnie Mac’s Trailer Park Cuisine for lunch.

  16. SandyO says:

Sorry for the double post, but for a good up to date review of what is going on in Boise, check out the Boise Weekly (either on line http://www.boiseweekly.com or grab a free copy when you get into town).

  17. Laura A says:

I just started reading your blog this week.  Just read this particular entry today.  You’re in my state.  You are 82 miles away from my town.  That is so freaking annoying.  I lived in Southcenter for something like 2 or 3 years.  If I wasn’t in school all day today (I really ought to be listening to the lecture right now), I would be at this reading.

    This sucks.

Not for you, though.  Have fun!

  18. Julia M. says:

Um – For Tukwila tomorrow, it’s raining here right now. Stupid great gray NW – it’s May already – C’mon! Bring the kicky rainboots, Candy.

    Spam word: seem14
Yes I know it’s only been raining for 14 minutes – it feels like 14 years!

  19. DeeCee says:

@ Casee-Rediscovered is off Overland Road between Orchard and Cole in an old strip mall.

-Flying M coffeehouse in downtown Boise-the art alone is worth it.

-Julia Davis Park-its got a beautiful rose garden, close to an art museum and a lot of places to eat, and across the street from the Boise Public Library.

  20. I had a great time at the signing! You were so much fun and I can’t wait to delve into my own copy of Beyond Heaving Bosoms! I ended up taking the kids I brought to the food court at that big mall across the street before hand (barely, we were crunching time!). Hope you found something fun to do!

  21. Claudia says:

I live in the Bay Area, so I don’t have any advice, but I did want to say this, from a French major at SFSU: I love your Franglais. You guys are pretty plein d’awesome yourselves.

  22. Candy, you are one of the most eloquent crack-ups ever! The signing was a lot of fun. Where else can I hear heroes described in terms like “flaming wad of jerk” followed a few minutes later by “hypertrophied masculinity.” Glad you could make it up to WA~

Sun97 – it will be 97 more days before we see sun in the ever-rainy NW…  cry

  23. Candy says:

I finally got to say “titty” out loud in a Barnes and Noble. My life is now complete. Thanks to everybody who showed up! I’ll post the drink recipes and such tomorrow.

  24. Lori says:

Candy, I’m bleary eyed from staying up too late reading Heaving Bosoms (like chips, once you start, you can’t read just one page). If all readings were that brilliant, I’d never get any real life done. Thank you!

  25. Katherine says:

SOOOOO sorry I missed it : (  but I had to tell you that “going to tukwila” is an old Seattle-area euphemism for “having sex.”  (see http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=going+to+Tukwila)

And yes, McDonald’s books is way nice; I’ve been able to fill in a bunch of my Georgette Heyer collection there : )

    You Rock!!
