Friday Videos Say WTF Some More

Thanks to Juli, we have this NSFW eye candy mixing, as she puts it, “mullet, bare (female) breasts, bare (male) breasts, an underwater sprite who kills people, and a distinct “Lucius Malfoy” vibe.” How do you resist that? Dmitry Hvorostovsky is a Russian baritone, and Juli found this via the OperaChic blog.

Somewhere, an art department employee at a publishing house is looking at this video, and feeling the fiery zing of excitement at the idea of four million cover art ideas in one convenient music video.

Somewhere, a movie (based on a comic book) is missing all its freaks. I’m speechless.

    Nice man titty, though.

  2. Wolf says:

    What an amalgamation.

    distinct “Lucius Malfoy” vibe.”

Dinstinct is putting it mildly, how about overwhelming?

And you forgot the S&M overtones.

  3. GrowlyCub says:

Can’t say I’m impressed with his voice.

And that video is just such a male fantasy come to life, ugh.

  4. lexie says:

Disturbing! The music was eh as were the man titties.  And what was up with all the swords…compensating, much?

  5. Michele says:

    WTF?

And I always hate the fact that I find Lucious Malfoy hot even though he’s evil.

  6. Oy. I was sort of loving it until we got to the bit with the red-hot whip. Geezey creezey.

  7. ev says:

could you post the links? Vid links still aren’t working. thanks

  8. Sandra D says:

It’s like a trainwreck, I want desperately to look away but I just can’t.

  9. KCfla says:

    Okay. Um.
    Words just escape me.

  10. That’s very special. Wasn’t there a similar video posted a few months ago with a guy who looked scarily like David Bowie and truly cheesetastic music?

  11. Kimmie says:

I kinda liked it. They just don’t show “artsy-fartsy” music videos on VH1 anymore.

  12. Sarah Frantz says:

Jesus Christ, what the HELL was he doing with that whip?!

  13. BeckyAnn says:

Did anyone else notice that the gal was an odd amalgam of Tilda Swinton and Anne Heche?

  14. I’ve loved Dmitri’s voice since he beat Bryn Terfel to win Cardiff Singer of the World, way back in 1989. The video is insanely crazy, and I love it, but it isn’t the best demonstration of his voice.
He’s Russian, prematurely grey (known as The Silver Fox in opera circles) and he is sexy as hell. A better example of his singing:

  15. Kimi McG says:

Wow.. Oh God, someone please speak Russian and tell me wtf is going on?!

I was okay with the whip, but I wanna know the lyrics. I give you 7 to 1 odds that they don’t have anything to do with what’s on that screen.

But hey, man’s got some nice boobs. ^.^

  16. Polly says:

I thought she looked kinda like Cate’ Blanchett’s Elizabeth mixed with Tilda Swinton.

That was both weird and wonderful. I’ll probably spend way longer today than I should trying to figure out what the heck exactly was going on in that video.

  17. KimberlyD says:

Was that Professor Xavier (from X-Men) conducting the music?

  18. hapax says:

    I dunno.

I mean, I love the glowing jism and all, but O Grandpa, what big balls you have…

  19. Cassie says:

    W…T…F?

Other than that, I got nothin’.  I’m speechless.  And confused.  And a little creeped out too…

  20. Liz says:

def creeped out…did it look like the guy’s head was plastered onto someone else’s body for the shots that weren’t of him singing?  geez that girl really dug being wipped.  and what was with the wierd orgy-like thing…strangest video i have ever seen (and that includes the video from the 80’s with the robotic legs)!

  21. Helen M says:

My major wtf-issue with this is the whip work – not because it squicked me or anything, but more because (as it seems to me) the man wielding it (CGI’d movement nonwithstanding) does not look like he has ever done so before – it’s just … wrong.

…I fear I’ve said too much.

  22. StarOpal says:

Helen M.> You’re not alone in finding the obvious lack of whipping experience to be the most distracting thing about it. Also how it came no where near her, but, yeah.

It’s nice to see The Labyrinth’s Goblin King crystal balls getting work these days.

So, are they supposed to be reincarnated (only he came back in her body and she in his [the stabbing scene makes me think so])? In some sort of futuristic Hell? That’s the vibe I was getting at the end.

Yeah if anyone has translated lyrics I’d like to see them, though I know it’ll have nothing to do with what’s going on onscreen.

  23. Little Cecilou says:

Um, actually Kimi McG , he’s singing in french (even though I can’t understand everything he’s singing because it’s opera…), and yes, the lyrics don’t have much to do with what’s going on in the clip.
I guess it’s the typical story about a guy, who’s thinking of a girl he loves (’‘you and me amidst the undecided’’ comes back several times…). Not much to add to that, except that, for a Russian, he has a very good pronounciation of french.
And I apologise if I made a few mistakes (french is my mothertongue).
By the way, great blog, I love what you do !

  24. StarOpal says:

Oh and she reminds me of Tilda Swinton meets Bryce Dallas Howard.

    Okay, now I’m done.

  25. SarahT says:

Scary stuff! Gotta love the mullet, though.

  26. Babs says:

    Ohhhh-kaaaay.

Now I feel like I’m been subjected to “The Cell, Part 2.”

But without the perk of Vincent D’Onofrio.

  27. Courtney says:

WOW.  Um, I actually laughed out loud, and at one point exclaimed “WTF???”

Sketchy plotlines aside, did anyone notice the bald dudes looked like the twin “oracles” in that crazy Tom Cruise movie?  Can’t remember the name right now but they were floating around in water all the time….

  28. Suze says:

Oh so many questions, and they all begin with WTF!

I also thought the conductor looked like Patrick Stewart, but I can’t watch it again.  I like artsy-fartsy videos, but that right there is a good reason why art students need mentors.

  29. D.L. says:

Because opera just wasn’t confusing enough…?
I definitely got the Tilda Swinton vibe too.

  30. Alyssa Day says:

oh that’s really oddly disturbing on so many levels.  Really.  Creepy.  And why is Lucius flogging SWINTON with the whip??

  31. Christine M. says:

So this is what Vin Diesel woud look like with Lucius Malfoy’s wig on. Hmmmmm.

  32. Christine M. says:

Ok, I thought I’d heard a couple of French words in there (French’s actually my mother tongue) and I’d be delighted to translate the lyrics if I could actually get my hand on them, because honestly? Even if I close my eyes and focus on the words, I don’t understand 80% of it. I’ve been looking around for the lyrics online, and so far, no luck.

  33. Is this their entry in the Eurovision Song Contest?

  34. rayvyn2k says:

    This is just…

    …I have no words.

    Spam word: help24

Not even Jack Bauer can help this one.

  35. jmanna says:

Who knew Laurell K. Hamilton directed music videos. Huh.

  36. karina says:

WTF?!! Reminding myself why I never watch russian tv anymore… That was beyond cringy.. And the bald conductor? Don’t even start me on that. He’s been around since the 80s, and he is responsible for composing some of the worst songs in human history.
Love the comment about LKH, by the way!

  37. Quizzabella says:

Were they maltesers rolling about at the end?

  38. Zeba says:

    OMG WTF!!!! eeeeeeuuuuuwwwww!

Seriously tho’, I can’t think what Hvorostovsky is doing in that car-crash of a vid.

  39. Jade says:

Did, um, anyone else think Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII?  The white hair, the black cape, and finally the sword going through the girl’s chest?

    [/gaming nerd]

  40. roseolla says:

Yikes, it’s really too bad that he’s doing crap like this. Dmitri’s quite a terrific and legit opera singer.

    Best when singing Russian:
