I’m headed up to Toronto a week from today to tape an appearance on the Steven & Chris show, and to invade the Harlequin Headquarters and look for the elusive tycoon billionaire who hides amongst the maidenheads. The folks at CBC want me to bring a few romances to illustrate the updated power of romance novels on the market today, and while I have a few examples of supreme awesome on the shelf currently, I wanted to ask – any recommendations of romances that have either Canadian settings, or hero/heroine, or hero/hero, or heroine/hero, or werewolf/demon, etc?
I have this thread to use, and be sure I will, but in the event that there’s a more recent title that I missed, let me know your suggestions.
Can I recomment Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. There has not been one person I lent this book to that did not get the series themselves. I sent a copy of Darkfever with my husband when he went on a snowboarding trip with his friends and by the time he came back there had been near fights over who was reading next!!
I would also recommend the first 3 Lynn Viehl Dark Kyn books as well as Games of Command by Linnea Sinclair which is more scifi orientated.
Bitten by Kelley Armstrong. The author’s Canadian, the heroine is Canadian, and it starts off in Toronto (Toronto and Vancouver being the only Canadian settings that generally appear in novels, you understand). And it rocks.
Also, anything by Tanya Huff, but they tend to be more scifi/fantasy with romantic elements than paranormal romances
Kate Bridges does Canadian settings for the Harlequin Historical line. I have several in my TBR pile(s) but can’t vouch for anyone in particular.

The Hero, Simon St. Bride of Brideswell (they said that over and over in the book, oh the St. Brides of Brideswell? Everyone knows them!) well anywho, he was stationed in York (which I think is now Toronto) during the War of 1812.
Manhunter by Loreth Anne White was a Nov 08 Silhouette Romantic Suspense I really enjoyed. Very atmospheric, and it’s set in the remote Yukon wilderness. The author is Canadian and the hero’s RCMP.
I have to second the Jo Bev nomination. I just re-read A Lady’s Secret and was reminded of her amazing amazingness. Not to mention all the work she does to promote romance as a smart woman’s enterprise.
Well, Lynsay Sands’ Argeneau Vampire series is set mostly in Canada. And the latest is out today.

That takes place in a futuristic quaranteened Canada and the heroine is a mountie!
This is an older book, but you might get a lot of mileage out of it since it was also made into a movie starring the delectable Paul Gross: Getting Married in Buffalo Jump by Susan Haley.
It has a Canadian setting and a marriage of convenience set in modern times.
TO the shelves I go! I know I have a couple of contemp. ones… and I’m thinking of one where heroine was from Canada and came to US but might have to go back… grrr! name block. I’ll post again if I figure it out

Kelley Armstrongs Nadia Stafford series has her as a hitwoman/ lodge owner. Lynsay Sands vampire series is set in Toronto.
I’ve just enjoyed the m/m werewolf short story, Nut Cream by Jade Buchanan in the anthology Temperature’s Rising. I was amazed to find it was set in Calgary, in a large park at the edge of my neighbourhood.

A surprising amount of m/m contemporaries are set in Canada. Can I remember any now? No, of course not. Sigh.
Yes, but they’re great and the relationships are interesting and complicated. Plus Henry Fitzroy (one of the characters and a bastard son of Henry VIII) writes romance novels under a pseudonym and how cool is that?

Michelle Rowen’s humorous paranormal ‘Bitten & Smitten’ is set in Toronto.
Why is there no piggyback announcement of booksignings while you’re here in town? Why do Steven and Chris (who used to have a fab show as their alter egos, The Designer Guys) get all the fun? How about some chat with local RWA chapter?
Donna Alward sets her stories in Canada. She writes for the HQ Romance line.

Susan Lyons writes books set in Canada. Her Awesome Foursome books, are damn good.

My recommendations would be Kate Bridges (like Dagny suggested) and Opal Carew (hot and spicy book and covers). Both authors are Canadian and some if not all their books take place in Canada.

Can’t believe I forgot about this – it was a fave re-read when I was younger. ‘One in a Million’ by Margaret Gayle, June 1985. Heroine wins the lottery in Toronto and she and her hot bodyguard run off to Paris to adjust to her new life.
Alas, no. I’m sorry about it, too. But as soon as I’m done at CBC, I have to head for the airport to get home in time for Seder. Passover starts that night.
I and my bread of oppression are way bummed. But, since it’s alarmingly easy to fly to Toronto from Newark on Porter Air, I may be back.
