Philadelphia Inquirer Features Romance-Positive Article

Jen Miller of the Philadephia Inquirer wrote quite the romance-positive article on the writers behind the genre: Writing romances, without the cliches. Well done, Jen!

Beth Ciotta, author of the upcoming Evie Ever After,  is featured, as well as debut author Shobhan Bantwal and Ellora’s Cave author Stephanie Julian. And, well, me, the man titty media pundit:

Obviously, some people are still reading the novels filled with ripping bodices and windblown hair, even if those kinds of romance novels went the way of Max Headroom, snap bracelets and Clear Pepsi. Contemporary romance novels focus on anything from NASCAR to vampires. And the people doing the writing lead lives as full as their characters’.

“They are amazingly intelligent women who are exceptionally talented,” says Sarah Wendell, coauthor of Beyond Heaving Bosoms: The Smart Bitches’ Guide to Romance Novels (Fireside, April 2009, $15) and a romance-industry blogger at www.trashybooks.com. “They’re not just women in fanny packs or extremely rich women in big pink houses writing about love nubbins all day.”

I’d like to thank the editor who allowed my quote to go through, love-nubbins and all. And mad props to Jen Miller – any time romance authors receive positive media coverage for the hardworking, creative, and intelligent women they are is a very very good day.

Teh awesome!  Nice antidote to some of the OTHER press (and neglect) we’ve noted lately.

  2. Jessa Slade says:

I do like how you qualified “not JUST women in fanny packs.”  Sometimes the truth hurts.  But as a well-respected man titty pundit, you know that.

  3. jmc says:

Hmm.  I’m not sure I’d classify Bantwal as a romance writer.  Maybe chick lit.  Maybe.  But closer to general fiction.

Still, it’s great to see a romance-positive article in the MSM!

    man titty media pundit

Snort!  You need a piece of jewellery with that engraved on it, Sarah.  Or maybe a card case, for your Man Titty Media Pundit business cards.

  6. Suze says:

That was AWESOME!  I agree, business cards with “Man-Titty Pundit” would be a very cool thing.

Or maybe a bag, or coffee cup, just to keep us buying them.  Man-Titty Connoisseur.  Purveyor of Man-Titty.

  7. Deb Kinnard says:

Oh, man! And here I was looking to get my big pink house any day now!

    Good quote in any case.

  8. Michele says:

Great article. Intelligence abounds. Philiadelphia Inquirer rocks!

  9. Mary M. says:

Great quote Sarah :). And it’s nice to see somewhere speak in favor of romance instead of more derogatory comments from uninformed people.

  10. Glynis says:

Ahhh, love nubbins. Any day that phrase appears in print is a Very Good Day.

Also, not just an an engraved card case, but you should sign your name, SB Sarah, MTMP on all future correspondence.

  11. Barb Ferrer says:

Love nubbins made me snort my coffee.

Also?  Loved, loved, loved this quote:

“A senior gentleman brought up my book and asked me when my next book was coming out because he enjoyed the series,” she says. “You can never assume because of someone’s gender, age or race what they’re reading.”

  12. Beth Ciotta says:

Sarah, I thought Jen Miller did an amazing job as well. And I know, because she had an advanced copy with her, that she was really enjoying ‘Beyond Heaving Bosoms: The Smart Bitches’ Guide to Romance Novels’. 🙂

At any rate, it was such a delight to see the genre featured in a positive and entertaining way. I’m still beaming!
