Peace Corp Emily Checks In With Us

Ever supporting my belief that the readers of this site are some of the most amazing people walking the planet, Emily in Senegal has a funny story and a humble request.

Emily, if you recall, was a HaBO request some months ago before she left for the Peace Corp. Now that she’s on assignment and workin’ it, she’s discovered a few new ways to help the community she’s in, and in particular, helped someone discover through petty larceny the power of Susan Elizabeth Phillips. (Note: Larceny is how I discovered romance, so I have a tiny feeling of shame at poor Emily’s plight.)

I’m still in the Peace Corps, and I know this isn’t your thing, but I thought I would give you a heads up about something I’m doing. I am trying to raise money to buy children here computers, and a little bit would go a long, long way.

Also, I am still reading romance novels. I picked up Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ “Glitter Baby” when I was home for Christmas and hadn’t gotten to it yet. I think the actual glitter on the cover proved too much for a villager and they stole it. I have no idea what I would have thought of the book (if it was along the lines of “Honey Moon” I’m better off not having read it), but her publisher apparently designed a cover some people can’t resist. I hope the s.o.b. who stole it is having fun.

Go Emily, Go. I hope you raise the money you need, and that your time in Senegal is rewarding and leaves a very lasting impression – and that Glitter Baby does as well, for whomever has it. Very few of us have extra money sitting around, but I know in cases like these, even a tiny amount can make a world of difference. Emily’s deadline for fund raising is 24 February, 2009.

I’m sending money because I think it’s an amazing thing to support.

And I’ve emailed Emily to offer up my copy of Glitter Baby, though I haven’t read it, so I can’t compare it to Honey Moon (which I liked, but not as much as Hot Shot). I’m quite certain I can replace it more easily here than she can there.

Thanks for pointing me in Emily’s direction.  Donation made and feeling good. 🙂

Hopefully, this post began 37 more donations.

  3. Emily says:

You have all been amazing! Thank you so much. I am much closer to my goal and have been truly overwhelmed by everyone’s response. So is the group receiving the donations.  If they ask what my secret is I think they will be a little surprised by my answer!

Come to think of it, larceny is how I discovered the romance genre as well. I guess now I can be more forgiving.

Had to donate and run, but am checking in now and am tickled that others have donated as well!  As rayvyn2k said – “feeling good now”.  Glad to have made this cause my good deed of the day!

Thanks for highlighting Emily’s work – what a great cause!
