Help A Bitch Out

HaBO: Mysteries

Bitchery reader Eva says:

‘ve recently taken to reading to my grandmother who at this time is ill. However she is a bit picky about what books she is interested. I was hoping to find some romantic mysteries set in the 1920’s-1930’s, preferably in England. We’ve already read some Dorothy L. Sayers. If you know of any offhand or could point to website I could hunt down the information I would appreciate it. I’m sorry for making such a broad request.

I hope your grandmother recovers nicely – and that you find some marvelous books to share!

Not appropriate to the time period, but “The Thin Woman” and/or “God Save The Queen” by Dorothy Cannell might work for her.

  2. Trish Olsen says:

Phillipp MacDonald was an english mystery writer of this period. His most famous novel was The Murder of Roger Ackryod. His detective was Anthoy Gethryn. Earlier books have him meeting his wife Lucia. Very good, a lot like Niago Marsh.

Er, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is by Agatha Christie; OTOH, Anthony Gethryn was MacDonald’s series sleuth.  MacDonald’s best-known novel (which I haven’t read, I fear) is probably The List of Adrian Messenger, which was adapted for the big screen in the 1960s.
