Friday Videos Love Semicolons

I know many people think semicolons are pretentious. But I maintain that punctuation of any kind is sexxay.

  1. Karen in Ohio says:

    Fantastic!

Do you think it will help?

  2. JoanneL says:

@Karen… no it probably won’t help… but it may stop a few of the haters long enough for them to get a grip on their nastiness.

These ladies did a great job and if they had just mentioned using PARAGRAPHS then I would have really loved it.

    Thanks Jill & Sarah.

  3. krsylu says:

I LUV IT! U WLD NT BLEVE HOW MUCH I LUV IT! THE R TEH BOM!

or, in other words: I love it! You wouldn’t believe how much I love it! Those girls are really funny and make their point so well!

  4. If loving semicolons is wrong; I don’t wanna be right.

Also, love this. No one has worse commenters than YouTube—it’s the place where the zombies from Thriller go to practice their typing.

  5. Julie Leto says:

Speaking of paragraphing…the local news station removed the ability to paragraph from the comments section on stories.  I no longer post.

I wish the morons there would watch this video.  It couldn’t hurt!

    Awesome video!

  6. I would be utterly lost without the semicolon, and I have never understood why people dislike them or what the problem is with them. It’s useful punctuation; it serves an important purpose.

Worse is when people use commas instead. That drives me nuts. Commas and semicolons are NOT interchageable!

  7. Claudia R. says:

    Hell yes!  Finally!

What can I say; I am a grammar snob, and proud of it.

  8. Keira says:

So awesome!!! This video tickled me pink… haha. I’m part of the facebook group called, “I judge you when you use bad grammar.” I wonder if the video has made it onto the group???

  9. Silver James says:

There is so much to love about this video! Thanks to Jill and Sarah for spreading the grammar. (Even though I am guilty of using the occasional web-ism. OMG, teh funny!)

  10. Stelly says:

That was amazing.  My English teacher would love this video!

  11. sj9642 says:

    I thought that was great.

  12. Elizabeth Wadsworth says:

Since when are semicolons considered pretentious?  They’re a necessary part of speech if you don’t want to write short, choppy sentences.

(I won’t even try to watch the video, as I have super-slow dialup, but here’s a question for those who have seen it:  Are semicolons now one of those “taboo” parts of speech along with the adjective and adverb that writers and would-be writers are warned against using in excess?)

  13. Alpha Lyra says:

Love the video! And I love semicolons, too.

  14. Madd says:

    Sister Salad, your awesome!

I get such a kick out of things like this. Too bad I’m suck so badly at the grammar.

  15. Julie Leto says:

Elizabeth, no.  In the video, the semi-colon and all punctuation are celebrated.

Personally, I like an occasional semi-colon.  Not too many, mind you.  I do think they should be used sparingly so that the beauty of them is not missed.  Like caviar, which isn’t quite so yummy if it is eaten every day, IMO.

  16. Kaetrin says:

What a great video!  Someone has finally made punctuation cool!

  17. Vanessa says:

    GENIUS!!!!

and for those who love punctuation, I refer you to Eats, Shoots and Leaves, funniest book featuring a punctuation Panda, also genius lol

  18. Vanessa says:

oops, i mean “I point you towards Eats, Shoot and Leaves

which is why one shouldn’t talk on the phone and type at the same time lol

  19. HeavySigh says:

As a former editor, I loved the video.  As a former editor, I hate semicolons.  I think they’re an excuse for breaking up run on sentences.  Use a period instead. (Did I just post a series of choppy sentences?  Or did I just post a succinct opinion?)

  20. Katherine says:

I am totally directing people to this video – it’s so true! The webcomic Penny Arcade once submitted the Greater Internet F**k-wad Theory, which is just as true for YouTubers and many web comment sites – “Normal Person + Anonymity + Audience = Total F**kwad”.

I only wish it would help, but it’s a hilarious commentary and a well done vid!

  21. KristieJ says:

That was great, I loved it!

  22. pamelaM says:

I loved it!  I have a real problem with commas though; – : , I really like them and use them A LOT! lol

PS I’ve been lurking around here a while……and sending links to ALL my friends!  I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!

  23. Trix says:

@HeavySigh, yes, your comment did look choppy to me, sorry. What would be wrong with joining the second and third sentences with a semi-colon? It wouldn’t detract at all from your empathic point-making final sentences, and would actually provide some nice contrast.

If text has too much of the same rhythm (whether all long convoluted clauses, or choppy-choppy), I tend to find it hard to read after a while. It’s best to vary things a bit.
