Ever wondered about the large scale and small scale environmental impact of eBooks? Wonder no more: Grist.org takes a look at the issue, from the technology involved to the saving of paper. Interesting food for thought.

  1. I wonder if the researchers took the hideously wasteful mmp returns system into account when they did the figuring for print books. If they didn’t, you can probably add another 10-15% to the CO2/water totals…

Now that I think of it, maybe big publishers could use some help from the Sierra Club on that returns thing.

  2. My thought exactly… did they take into account the planned overage of 50% from most mass market (lol I typed m/m at first) print runs.

Oh, PHEW.  I just got an ereader, and I was like, NOOOO, don’t let them figure out some way they are more wasteful.  Now I can feel proud. I would feel a hell of a lot prouder if I could get the books loaded in, though.  Ereaders are CONFUSING!!!  To me.

Don’t forget to add in the mag return on that one. I cringe everytime I have to strip and toss a book.
