Raina writes:
The story is about a young woman (I think she was a kindergarten teacher?). She’s claustrophobic, and while trying to visit her rich friends, she get’s stuck in an elevator in their building with a man.Freaking out, the man helps her get through the situation, and he takes her back to his apartment to calm her down. One thing leads to another and they end up sleeping together.
She leaves while he’s still asleep, and they both never find out each other’s names. He finally tracks her down somehow and learns she’s pregnant.
He’s a really successful lawyer. I think she’d moved to a new town, and told all her neighbours and coworkers that she had been married, and her husband had died…but then he shows up surprising everyone.
Please help! this has been bugging me forever!
Ok, Secret baby conceived in an elevator? That would make an AWESOME Aerosmith song, right? Right…!?
I think it’s Words of Silk, by Sandra Brown. Laney McLeod and Deke Sargent. She is a kindergarten teacher and he’s a well to do businessman and older than Laney.
Deke is one of the old-school heroes, which means he moves into Laney’s life and takes it over, all for her own good, of course, and the baby’s.
Oh, and sorry, but the baby was conceived in Deke’s apartment. He just started loosening her clothing in the elevator, just to help her in her panic attack. Laney just goes along because she’s so claustrophobic and needy 🙂
Yes, Words of Silk. I was so excited that I actually knew what book was being described. This one has fond memories for me as one of my first romances.
Dang it, I knew the author right away. I would have had to go look up the title. Don’t forget, Laney was drunk (celebrating something w/her friends in the building).
Yeah, he drove me kind of crazy, the way he just took over.

Claustrophobia as a fertility aid…
:backing away slowly:
So many good HaBOs in one day. Maybe there could be a HaBO giveaway or eBay auction (for a cause)?
Yay, Aerosmith! Indeed, love in an elevator. Livin’ it up when I’m goin’ doooowwwwn!
Which has to be my least-favourite Aerosmith song, but still. Is there any situation, anywhere, anytime, that an Aerosmith song is not the appropriate soundtrack? I think not.
I am going to have to read that book now, it sounds to good.
Conceiving in an elevator…
Now, if you want conception in an elevator, look no further than Mary Janice Davidson’s “Love’s Prisoner.” Of, course, it is with a werewolf …
Some readers might be turned off (just a tad) because it’s not exactly … consensual. (He’s a werewold, the full moon is coming, she’s “in heat,” you get the picture.)
captcha is “child85.” apropos …
I don’t know if Words of Silk has been reissued under Sandra Brown. It was originally published under her Erin St. Claire pseudonym—Silhouette Desire #139, 6/1984.
Kay
I’ve read this one, too!
Yes. He gets her drunk and has unprotected sex with her, a virgin, all night long.
I think this was originally a Loveswept Romance.
I have the Erin St Claire version with the red Silhouette Desire cover.
I remember it as being one sexy (1980’s) read. I’ll have to hunt for it through my dusty top shelves…
Did they name the kid Otis?
*OTIS*! I just snorted my tea…
I read that one!!! I think it was a Sandra Brown book.
I can’t believe I’m thinking of finding this. I read this when I was in junior high and loved it. I have a big place in my heart for the secret baby.
It was definitely reissued under Sandra Brown’s own name. I’ve been making my way through the SB section at the library and remember this one very well.
If you really love secret baby stories – here’s a real life one for you! It was the talk of Ireland for a while. Girl has a one night stand with a fella she meets in one of Dublin’s most legendary dives. He leaves the next day, she winds up pregnant and she can’t find him anywhere. When the baby is five months old, she contacts a very popular radio show and tells the story, gives some details about the fella and lo and behold! He turns up a few days later.

Ms Spencer-Fleming, my keyboard is so not thankin’ you for that one-!
I love Sandra Brown but haven’t encountered this book yet. I have to check it out soon. Thanks.
oh my gosh, i had almost forgotten about this book until this HABO. haha i remember being so frustrated with laney for being so useless. didn’t deke force her into early mat leave, bedrest and then he redecorated the apartment and cooked/cleaned everything all while trying to win her over? i seem to remember he took a leave of absence from work just to rub her feet and buy her expensive gifts all day long?
yeah, THAT sounds like every man I’VE ever met…
not saying that any guy i’ve ever read about in a romance novel even mildly resembles any of the guys i know in real life, but come ON. when it’s that far-fetched it just makes me feel as though I’m being mocked for being a romantic.
give us a situation SOMEONE could relate to!
ps (i’m not gonna lie, i seem to remember the first section with the post-elevator lovin was fairly enjoyable.)
I’m reading Words of Silk now. I tried to resist. Okay, let me stop lying. I totally didn’t try to resist.
Based on the description I ordered it from the library.
Oh! I can’t wait until it’s in my hot little hands.
OMG>> i was looking for this book for the LONGEST TIME!!!! can’t believe that i finally found it.. just googled young preganet teacher.. and i GOT it.. THANKS!!!can’t wait to re-read it again!!
