Akismet

I am trying out Akismet on the Bitches today to see if it can put a stop to some of the irritating as hell comment spam we’ve been attracting. However, if this interferes with your ability to comment, please let me know via email (sarah @ smartbitchestrashybooks.com) and let me know if you were a logged in user or not, and what happened when you tried to say howdy.

Thanks – and my apologies for the unavoidable delay, mind the gap, and thank you, drive through.

I’m logged in and attempting to comment.  We have Akismet over at Plotmonkeys and it’s USUALLY pretty good.  Some long time commenters get caught up in it sometime and we’re not exactly sure why.  But not lately.

  2. Is it fate, or is it Kismet? Just a comment to aid in the filtering process.  🙂

  3. MoJo says:

FYI:  I love love love Akismet.  VERY rarely do I get anything caught that shouldn’t be.

  4. Silver James says:

Here’s my two cents worth. Let’s see if it works. I, too, have Akismet but it’s a mystery to me. I admit that my computer nerd takes care of my blog site. I just log in and post. *presses send* (I seem to be perpetually logged in here so I don’t get fun spaminator words – just sayin’.)

  5. BevQB says:

Okay, here’s a try where I’m not logged in. BTW, I’m on IE7.

    BevQB – programs74

  6. BevQB says:

And TAH-DA! Now I am logged in.

  7. rebyj says:

    I’m logged in..

Off topic..I’m totally bored and have no TBR pile.
    waaaaaaaaaaaaa

  8. Spider says:

    No problems here!

  9. darlynne says:

I’m logged in, no problems, and as usual, have no idea what we’re talking about, but when has that stopped me from commenting?

  10. elianara says:

    I’m not logged in..

And I have way too much to do, and have a huge TBR pile. I’m willing to share with me.

  11. BevQB says:

Totally weird. I subscribed to this thread via my gmail account. Well after EVERY gmail reply, I get a 2nd gmail that just has a link
    http://www.smartbitchestrashybooks.com/index.php?ACT=2&id=71062

When I clicked it, it thanked me for unsubscribing. That never happened before. (The unsubscribing, not the thanks, cuz, you know, I have received thanks on prior occasions.)

Rebyj, NO TBR?! Seriously? What’s that feel like. I’d be all twitchy and on the verge of full out panic.

  12. Tibbles says:

Seems to be fine to me.

  13. rebyj says:

It’s beyond twitchy! I even read a NON FICTION BOOK! OMG!
I’m now re-reading Kushiel’s Dart. Payday isn’t till next Wed. I hope I survive. lol

  14. Deb Kinnard says:

Rebyj, say it isn’t so! Talk about a fate worse than…

  15. Testing, 1,2,3….

[later]  It seems to be working fine at this end.

  16. Michele says:

Hopefully there will be no problem here with this.

  17. AgTigress says:

Well, I don’t know if this is connected, but I just tried to edit a comment on another thread (logged in, ‘edit’ still showing), and it wouldn’t let me.  A message came up saying ‘invalid comment edit’.

  18. JenTurner says:

I’m logged in.  Maybe we should try some words that usually appear in the comments somewhere, but also regularly appear in spam.

    Like…penis.  Penis?  Penis!

I often get the same spam e-mail that asks me if I want to “update my penis”.  It always leaves me with an image of some naked guy with one end of a USB cord attached to the computer and the other end hooked to his junk. 🙂

Well, at least you’ve got yourself one that should hold your concentration. I have to be in the mood for her because, as good as she is, she makes the reader PAY ATTENTION.

Sorry for OT Sarah, but dammit,  TBR emergencies oughtta trump Blog hiccups, right?

  20. Lorelie says:

rebyj, I don’t *like* keeping a TBR pile more than the most recent trip to the bookstore, and now I have one with like 70 books in it.  That’s what makes *me* twitchy.

I blame Nationals.  I still haven’t caught up.

A PS actually pertaining to the post – I’m on Safari, and signed in.  Let’s see if my comment makes it.

  21. pippy says:

rebyj, if your local library is any good, you can probably get something readable there.  My husband claims we have drasticly reduced our monthy budget once I learned how to request books online though our local library, truly, I hardly every buy books anymore, I just request them though the library.  I can even request many of the ellora’s cave, which i am sometimes ashamed to do, but you do what you gotta do.  Not that I am ashamed of reading the almost porn, but sometimes i get attacks of prudity.

I have tried several times to read the kushiel books, but never seem to get into them… maybe i will try again soon.

  22. rebyj says:

Nashville has a lovely library downtown but the neighborhood ones have odd hours and are pretty much devoid of anything new. The downtown one is too far away. Besides, if I read a book I like, I don’t wanna take it back! lol

Bev, it does keep ones attention! I catch something new each time I’ve read it.
Pippy , I fell in love with Kushiel’s Dart because of how beautifully lyrical the prose is.

So far no problem posting. I should go check email and see if I have any notifying emails.

  23. RfP says:

Rebyj, I use the library like Netflix—request all kinds of authors I’ve never tried before, have them all sent to my local branch, and see what arrives first.

material99 is indeed the limit on materials my library will let me check out at once.  I haven’t yet hit the request limit, but I’m trying.

  26. TarotByArwen says:

Generally Akismet detests me. Let’s see if I go to Spamland again. LOL

  27. TarotByArwen says:

Yep, got put in the Spam folder.

  28. Rene S. says:

    Testing… am I signed in?

  29. Rene S. says:

Yes! I am! Ok, it works for me.

  30. eaeaea says:

Testing it out from down under.

Speaking of which, just re-read Candy’s D-minus LOLporn review of ‘Decadent’.
I lurve that review. Cracks me up every friggin’ time.

  31. Melissa says:

I still go back and re-read the Cassie Edwards review—can’t remember the title but it’s the one that mentions the magic flute.  🙂

I’m not logged in, so let’s see if I can get through.

  32. Lyvvie says:

    I don’t see what’s different…yet?

  33. joykenn says:

Rebyj, do check out the public library.  I’ve cut back drastically on the books I buy cause it was getting expensive and I’m running out of space to keep anything more.  I also request lots of things—I see a review and I get online to my library and reserve it or request it.  I generally have holds on about 10 books running at a time.  Then if I really, really like something and think it is a keeper I can buy it.  I’m amazed at how few books are really keepers once I’ve read them.  If I find myself thinking about them later and wanting to re-read something, I can always reserve the book again or go online and buy it if it isn’t in stores locally.  Hey, really think about it seriously.  Do I really re-read all the hundreds of books I’ve got stashed everywhere?

  34. Lovecow2000 says:

    testing

  35. TarotByArwen says:

Testing to see if I go back to spamland. 🙂

    “picture58”

    Picture 58 what?

  36. Ann-Kat says:

I’ve been using Akismet since the launch of the blog and it’s managed to trap every spam comment (no false positives yet, crossing fingers), but I heard that if you start getting too high a number of spam or if they find out it’s a commercial blog/business, they’ll require you to buy a license. Don’t know how true that is, but in case, you may want to look into TypePad AntiSpam which they claim will always be free (though it’s from TypePad, there’s a WordPress plugin): http://antispam.typepad.com/

(NB: I am not affiliate with TypePad in any way, nor have I personally used it.)

  37. Ann-Kat says:

Erm…darn…as soon as I published the comment I realized you weren’t using WP, you were using Expression Engine. Feel free to disregard the previous suggestion. LOL

  38. SB Sarah says:

Ann-Kat – thank you for the heads up! I didn’t realize there was a license for blog/businesses. I’m on that like erotica heroes on … never mind.

  39. Tina C. says:

    Just trying to say “howdy”
