Friday Videos Love West Virginia

Technically my hometown is Pittsburgh, but for a few years I worked at a summer camp in Morgantown, West Virginia, and this weekend Hubby and I are headed there for a camp reunion. We got together at camp, and are very much “camp people.” So I’m very excited to be going back to West Virginia this weekend. For anyone who may not realize how beautiful different parts of the US really are, enjoy.

And did I mention that Friday videos like Canada? Thanks to a dinnertime discussion on Canada Day about how different countries have songs, “O Canada” is now the #1 requested lullabye of choice in my house, and this video of the Edmonton Oilers fans is awesome, not only because the whole stadium can sing in unison, but they know all the words to their national anthem.

I love Autumn, followed by Spring. Which is why I will always be a Northern Girl. I may have to deal with the cold, bone chilling winters and the hot, humid summers, but the payoff of the colors of fall and spring make it all worth while.

  2. YAY for Pittsburgh people!  🙂  I’m about 30 minutes from WV.  Don’t get down there much, but there are some beautiful places down there too.

  3. Alessia Brio says:

I always list my location as Pittsburgh (‘cause it’s the closest “big” city), but I’m really a West Virginian born and raised—and currently living in Morgantown. “My” state is gorgeous, no doubt.  Enjoy your visit!!!

  4. Cindy Holby says:

West Virginia Girl here.  Have lived up and down the Kanawha River and several of my historicals take place there.  Wild and Wonderful describes it well.

  5. Kristie(J) says:

What gorgeous pictures!  And I always loved that song by John Denver.  Have a great weekend.

  6. Lori says:

My earliest memories are of living in W.V.  Friends of my family owned a cabin on a river and we would go there for weekends and vacations and I can still remember how beautiful it was.  Now that I’m living on the east coast again I’m hoping to go back for a visit.

  7. Lizzie (greeneyed fem) says:

I grew up in West Virginia. I miss the mountains there every day.

  8. Suze says:

Wow, that was beautiful.  We don’t get that range of colours in Alberta in the autumn.

Um.  A couple of months ago I was loudly and enthusiastically singing O Canada at a work team-building thing thing (long story) and was APPALLED at myself.  I totally blanked on the words—the part where we say We Stand On Guard several times in a row.  I blame it on being over 40.

    *hands head in shame*

  9. Kim says:

Funny you should mention Morgantown, as that’s where I live. And weirdly enough, I also am originally from Pittsburgh.

At any rate, have a great visit here—the weather has been quite good the last couple of days, very comfortable.

  10. So beautiful!!!  As someone who lives in the Rockies, I’m fascinated by the idea that the Appalachians used to be big, icy mountains like the Rockies. But millions of years of change and erosion has softened them to smoky, blue-green peaks.

After seeing that, I’ll be sure to visit someday.

Oh, and Ev, I totally agree. Spring and fall, all the way. You should try the Rockies! Amazingly, our winters aren’t nearly as cold as winters in the north. And our summers aren’t as hot! Yay!

Got kind of a giggle when the final credits reveal the gorgeous pictures are from near Quebec. Friday videos really do like Canada today!

  12. ev says:

Victoria- I love the Rockies. I just haven’t seen them in the winter. I love the mountains period. If I had my choice I would live in or around them.

Never mind. I do. LOL I get a thrill, even after 10 years of living here, everytime I come over the hill on the highway home. We are in the Hudson Valley and there are hills and mountains all around (esp heading towards VT). I love to just drive in the fall and leaf peep. Gas prices are going to put a hurt on the retailers this fall.

was raised in WVa……near Harpers Ferrry……i now live in miami and have been in florida since 97…..i ALWAYS think about the beauty of west “by god” virginia..i miss it…damn, i miss it… 🙁

  14. joanne says:

I noticed that those pics are from Quebec.  WVa is really beautiful, but pictures like that can be taken anywhere from the mid-Atlantic USA to Canada.  The place I grew up looks exactly like that, but almost nobody believes that parts of NJ (the NW corner) are like that.  It’s not ALL paved!

  15. Inez Kelley says:

Life long native of WV Eastern Panhandle here and it is amazing how jaded one can get.  I see these views nearly everyday and need to remind myself not to take them for granted. WV may be poor and in some respects backwards but I would put our scenery on par with any other state in the union.

  16. Madd says:

A some of those pictures reminded me some much of Arkansas. My husband’s family lives around the Ozark foothills and it’s beautiful. My sister-in-law has a house atop a hill that has a view I’d about kill for. I was born and raised in Chicago, inner city, and except for visiting family down in Mexico, I didn’t get to see much country. When I first moved down to a small town in Arkansas it was a big culture shock for me. Probably didn’t help being the only non-white person in a town with a population of 69.

  17. ev says:

Anywhere on the East coast is usually good for some beautiful scenery.

I have a friend who lives in WV, in the middle of nowhere on a hill.

I spend a week every year in NJ and just love to get off the highway and drive around. We did that all the way in this year- took RT9 and had a blast.

I am only 20 minutes from either the VT or MA borders, so going on a roadtrip is always fun. Especially when it leads me to Burlington and I go shopping!!

spamword-walked13. Someday i will walk the trail. It will probably take me 13 years to do it too.

  18. Jess says:

Great to find others who appreciate the delights of WV. (I second Inez Kelly’s sentiments.)
I grew up in WV; now I live in NYC, certainly a totally different environment.  Don’t I miss WV sometimes.  I love driving back through the hills, especially in the fall.
Have a wonderful weekend with your family and friends in the Mountain state, Sarah.
