Help A Bitch Out - SOLVED!

HaBO: Looking for YA Johnny Blue

You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!

Bitchery reader Kathryn

I could use some Smart Bitch help trying to find a YA romance I read back when I was a teenager.  It was most likely published in the 1990’s or maybe late 1980’s.  The story involves cousins or a half-sisters (I can’t remember which) and for some reason one goes to live with the other’s family.  The one who is moving in is blonde and hawt and lets her boyfriend feel under her shirt, Sweet Valley-style.  The other cousin/sister is a shy brunette and fantasizes about some mysterious guy at her her school whom she secretly calls Johnny Blue or something like that.  Meanwhile, this sensitive football player named Greg secretly has a crush on Shy Girl, so blonde sister pretends to date him so he can get closer to Shy Girl. Why this is supposed to work, I have no idea. The story ends up with her going on a date with Greg, who turns out to be a dynamo kisser.  She also goes on a date with Johnny Blue, whom she ultimately rejects because he kisses like a cold fish.

I’m hoping the SB’s can help me with this one, because I’m drawing a complete blank!

Johnny Blue? BWAAHAHAHAH.

I will be so sad if no one knows this one.  It’s been bugging me forever!

  2. Allie says:

I feel like I read this and it might be an Ellen Conford novel – but I can’t seem to find it.

  3. Madd says:

This sounds so familiar that I want to bang my head into a wall until it pops out. Annoying tip-of-the-tongue sensation. Hate it.

  4. Rosalinda says:

Easy!  I love that book (and I have it on my shelf somewhere.  It’s called
The Meaning of Sisterhood by Beverly Sommers.  Great story, told from
the perspective of both sisters.  It’s out of print, if I remember correctly,
but I’d bought a used version sometime ago on Amazon.

  5. Rosalinda says:

Yep, Johnny Blue.  And the girls were half-sisters.

  6. Rosalinda says:

Oops…Billy Blue, actually.  See? This is what happens when you’re up at odd hours of the night!

  7. Kathryn says:

Yes!  Thank you!  I’ve been looking for this book for a scrillion years!

Wait, now that you said it, it is Billy Blue!  Oh, how I remember his cold fish lips.

*Toddles off to the used book store to look for a copy.*

word: book97.  And I read this book in 1997.  Spooky.

  8. Rosalinda says:

    Lol, enjoy the book!

  9. Pepper E says:

The description of the book reminds me of Just As Long as We’re Together by Judy Blume, though the details don’t quite all match up (it’s about 3 friends, not sisters. But the main girl fantasizes about the super popular guy, has a dazzling kiss with another less popular guy, etc etc).

  10. krsylu says:

Sounds a bit like that movie (which I haven’t seen) “10 Things I Hate About You”…

I love this movie! How can you not like a rich teen version of Taming of the Shrew? (Even the names are the same…)

    And oh, Heath Ledger.

  12. Their names are Kirsten and Ariel, Kirsten is the blond girl and Ariel is the shy girl. Yes, it is Billy Blue who’s Ariel admired. Kirsten have a boyfriend named Sean. The name of the guy who get close with Kirsten is Greg, the reason of this was for him to be able to get close with Ariel. At first, Ariel thought that Greg is courting Kirsten, until Greg admitted that he’s actually inlove with Ariel. The ending was Ariel and Greg were together same as with Sean and Kirsten.

  13. Seems like a lot of different answers here. Similar, but different.
