What’s In My Bag?

I put my review copy of The Duke of Shadows in my purse this morning, so excited to read it – and hello, Ann Aguirre sent me a link to her review and homage to the book that is SO good I think I need to excuse myself from every other thing I do to go read.

Ann is running a contest to spread the love about the book – so tell, have you read it yet? Is this one of your most-anticipated titles this month?

It’s definitely one of mine. Between this title and The Spymaster’s Lady, we may be looking at a whole new bar of excellence in historical romance.

I’m just starting to hear buzz over this one. The other one there seems to be a lot of buzz about is Private Arrangements by Sherry Thomas, which I read and it didn’t work for me. But alot of people really loved it.

    I am not a monkey, I am a Pig!

Where’s my bubble chair and my coastal cottage with the automatic doors Dear Bitches?

  3. Ann Aguirre says:

MaryKate, I think you’ll loooove The Duke of Shadows. It’s really, really special.

Thanks so much for the pimpage, Sarah. I SO want to tell the whole world about this book (and buy them a Coke and sing along).

  4. SB Sarah says:

Also, while I am looking at those covers, a whole new bar of mantitty and abdominal muscle definition, too.

  5. liz says:

MaryKate – I see why people are crazy about Private Arrangements but I wanted to like it a lot more than I did. I’d still suggest it to people – it was wildly different in some ways. When it dipped into convention I was actually disappointed. I’m looking forward to her second book tho – it was a really strong debut.

What’s this? Fabulous new historicals? I just checked my local Chapters and both books are in stock. I planned to make a visit to get the new Emma Holly but I shall sample the pages of these two and see if I’m caught. It kinda sucks for a historical reader when you only have Kleypas to depend on.

Btw has anyone tried her latest contemporary release? It’s a lot more accessible to her romance reader audience than the first which was definitely more “General Fiction”. (and surprisingly good! Still, me wants romance.)

  7. Lauren Dane says:

Ann ordered me to buy this book yesterday so I did. I’m really looking forward to reading it.

  8. I’m really enjoying DUKE OF SHADOWS.

  9. Ann Aguirre says:

You know, I should feel some shame about that, Lauren, but I don’t. *grins* Apparently I’m shameless.

  10. KarenF says:

Hey, that book is in my bag too.  I browsed it at the bookstore the other day, read the first chapter and was hooked.  I haven’t started reading yet because I had to finish another great read… an ARC of “Belong To Me” (the sequel to “Love Walked In” … one of the rare cases where I like the sequel better than the first book).

  11. azteclady says:

    Me want.

No shame in that either 😀

  12. Tae says:

Kleypas wrote another contemporary fiction book?  Ugh… I wasn’t too happy with Big Daddy (which had this total first time author feel like she had written it 20 years ago and was republishing it now since she’s famous)

  13. Tae says:

er by the way, if Ann Aguirre is recommending a book in such a manner as this, I think I will have to check it out.  Ann I just read Grimspace (due to the advertising on this website, and a few rabid reviews on Livejournal) and it’s fabulous.  I keep going back to the parts I loved the most and re-reading it.

  14. Jayne says:

Private Arrangements was a yeah! for me. Duke of Shadows was a DNF.

  15. Ann Aguirre says:

Wow, thanks, Danae. I’m delighted to hear you enjoyed Grimspace! I’m also blushing my recommendation carries gravitas with you. I just love what I love.

  16. limecello says:

I like historicals, so I’m all about this. I check Ann’s blog every day, and it’s fun to see how pages EXPLODE when you have contests. Much like the drink one- and I’d like to point out I was the first one to mention pomegranate. I need to get my hands on both of these books!
I’m also too lazy to click around :X but I love your April Fools posts. I’m pretty sure a lot of people would be taken in if you posted them elsewhere!

  17. Arethusa says:

Danae, you may not be too far off about that, since the romance element in Sugar Daddy did read as though she had fudged it in at the end. (And that title…oi.) But I liked the character’s voice enough to look over the technical awkwardness.

Blue-eyed Devil has some technical weaknesses too but I loved the hero (not sure why since he’s not *that* different from her historical romance heroes) and I appreciate the the kind of women Kleypas creates when she wanders a bit off the imperfect-but-not-really romance heroine path.

  18. Allie says:

I’m so excited because I basically only read historicals and it’s sometimes slim pickens’.  I can’t wait to pick up Private Arrangements and Duke of Shadows.

  19. JaimeK says:

I am on page 22 of Duke of Shadows..I am at work and cannot read here, but damn I want to!  I suppose I could crawl under my desk and no one would know….
