GS vs. STA: Oh, Canada!

Bitchery reader Amy asks for romances set in Canada – the Definitive List.

A friend and I were discussing the usual settings for romance novels and we suddenly wondered if there are any romance novels set in Canada (most particularly in Nova Scotia). I would love to see a book about the Canadian Mounty’s Secret Baby. Does anyone know of anything like that?

Personally, I want to know when will there be erotica about the ever-mounting Mounty? And when he arrives at That Crucial Moment, can there be an “Oh, CANADA!” joke? Because, well, it’s awesome?

Bound by Sasha White is set in Canada.  I’m not sure if it’s classified as erotica or romantica, but I liked it.  It’s fun to see one of those sweet mild-mannered Canadian boys get kinky.  *g*

All this M/M Mountie talk reminds me how I was obsessed 10 years ago with Due South (partly Cnd-produced TV show, set in Chicago, though… Mountie hero, all the stereotypes, very silly)

I got into it after they cast Callum Keith Rennie (R)

, and there was this magazine interview with Paul Gross (L) on the slash sites featuring him.

Although they are not usually classified as romance, Kelly Armstrong’s books Bitten and Broken are both partly set in Toronto. Michelle Rowan’s paranormal romance Bitten and Smitten also takes place there. I would love to see a romance novel set in the province of Saskatchewan – maybe Mary Balogh, who currently lives there, could be convinced.

One of Jo Beverley’s recent ones, Rogue’s Return, had one of the Rogues living in Canada when the book began.

Um, I also thought I’d mention, just in case you’re picturing being pulled over by a police officer in a three piece suit, the RCMP still wear the red serge uniforms for dress occasions, and have an everyday uniform with a grey shirt and dark blue pants, etc.

Oh I forgot to add one of my recent favs.

The Heart Of The Winter Wolf ~ Dunvegan Wolf Clan Series Book One by Dani Harper

Set in Canada. Great Werewolf Romance.

i have a mountie thing, and a collection of memorabilia that covers old chevy magazine ads, to barbie dolls, wedgewood china pieces, and books including pulp comic books.

the first mountie romance novels i found were Kathryn Fox’s The First Time, The Second Vow, and the Third Daughter, which are pretty terrible in terms of storytelling (i check out when the hero is also a clown at childrens’ parties.  he can just be am mountie, you know?), but have really great covers.

    Not romance, but-

Michael Slade’s books are set on Canadian West Coast and all feature Mounties as protagonists.  Especially Zinc Chandler, who is a great guy, but seems to get totally trashed in every book.  Psychos to the left, Psychos to the right, Psychos on administrative ordered vacations – the poor son of a bitch is a magnet for them.

My own recently release first book, Gym Dandy, is set in Toronto. It’s a gay romcom:

Northern Knights by Bobby Hutchinson features two RCMP officers who are the law in a small town up north and have to share quarters…said quarters having been designed when all mounties were men… His career is in a rut, hers is on the fast track, and she’s just hiding up north from organized crime until the trial is over from her last undercover assignment. He’s old school, she’s new but sparks fly, oh my! (Sorry, I couldn’t stop myself, been buying from Samhain/MBaM lately.)

Damn, now I want to read NK and I don’t have it any longer! I wonder if Harlequin would release it as an ebook? It was released way back when in 1987…

Uh, y’all know that the Mountie uniform copyright is actually owned by Walt Disney.  Right?  Mounties these days wear two- and three-piece suits to work.

Uhhhh, the RCMP uniform itself is not owned by Disney.  The traditional red uniform is still worn for special occasions (it’s not their day-to-day operating uniform).  Trust me; I grew up next-door to an RCMP officer. To sell a print or a trinket, well, then yes, they have rights to that.

Here is a CBC video file clip on allowing Disney to officially use the uniform in marketing merchandise:
