RITAs. I’m running out of titles for these entries.

I swear we both screamed.

    That’s total horse$hit.

  2. Kim says:

Yeah Barb!  I knew she could do it!

Thanks Ladies!  You saved my sanity with the RWA site being down!

  3. Jackie says:

First: Huzzah to Barb and ADIOS!

Second: Kim posted (comment #13) at Dear Author that Barb had little option for the categories she tried for. The RWA apparently canceled the YA category—and the RWA doesn’t allow contestants to enter Best First Book without also entering another category.

So good for Barb for throwing her hat in the ring for Best First Book—even though she didn’t win that particular prize. I can’t wait to read ADIOS; I think Barb is terrific, and her book has been getting marvelous reviews.

If anyone’s feathers are ruffled by a YA title winning Best Contemporary Single Title, I think they should take it up with RWA. But given how audiences blur, I’m not sure why this is such a big deal. And really, if RWA took away a YA-specific category, what other options do YA authors have?

Assuming the YA category remains gone (wow, I need coffee), I think we may see a new wave of YA titles competing for Ritas with adult titles. Hey—more great books to read!

  4. Jackie says:

Okay, I totally messed up the review link. Sigh. It was to the review here for ADIOS.

Shit. I’m never posting pre-coffee again.

    (Actually, that’s a lie.)

word: analysis31 – maybe that’s why I’m admitting the never-before-coffee statement is a lie. Or maybe I just need coffee.

There is much joy in Mudville this morning.

My verification word is “did11”…as in, she fucking DID IT. I may forgive the RWA everything after all…

  6. Julie Leto says:

Yeah for BARB/CARIDAD!!!  Couldn’t have happened to a sweeter writer or a better book.

But let’s be clear—RWA only cancelled the YA category because they didn’t have enough entrants.  There is a minimum for each category.  So that’s why Barb/Caridad encouraged all the other YA writers to enter next year so the category doesn’t officially go away.

  7. Jackie says:

    Thanks for that info, Julie.

Hey, I bought that book a few days ago based on comments by Bitches…passed it to the daughter to read first.  Now I’m looking forward to it even more.
