GS v. STA: Hot Older Women

Bitchery Reader Diving Belle has requested a rather broad area for a reading request, but it’s still worth exploring since, hey, she’s got a point. Women of Age in Romance can be hard to find sometimes:

Are there any authors/series that feature heroines who aren’t 18, or even 28?  (Perhaps these woman could even be *gasp* in their 40s?  I know, I know, but it is called fiction!)

As much as I love any juicy romantic yarn, it would be refreshing to read about Kickass Wimmen who weren’t born yesterday, or even the day before!

I hear that. So, what hawt older women do you know of in good romance novels? And more over, what did you like about the book?

Hannah Garvey from Suzanne Ledbetter’s direction series- smart and funny- picking up my copy of Halfway to Half Way at the indie bookstore tomorrow

  2. Estelle Chauvelin says:

I was going to mention PC Cast, too.  I think I remember Goddess of the Sea being the only one with a heroine who might not qualify.

Funny, I rarely seem to read romance with a heroine in her twenties (and never in her early twenties), unless we’re talking a historical where if she gets to twenty without being married the author had better make sure it’s explained why.

  3. Miki says:

Also, doesn’t Harlequin’s current series Next feature older heroines?

Next isn’t (necessarily) a romance line, though.  The request was vague enough that this may not be an issue.  But just thought I’d mention it…

Not exactly a romance – I don’t read a lot of romance, though I’ll look into any recommendations I’m given – but I’m quietly working on a novel where the central female character is in her late thirties. I’m nowhere near that age, but I’m trying to do her justice because I honestly do think she’s pretty cool.

On the other hand, she’s…not really listening to her conscience at the moment. For shame, Julia!

    Does that catch your interest?

  5. Promo alert – the third book in my Talking dogs series, Romantic Interlude, has an older hero and heroine 🙂 It’s at Ellora’s Cave.

There is a book that just came out called “All About Evie” by Beth Ciotta. Great romance, quirky, a fun read and Evie is 40.

  7. DT says:

Kelley Armstrong’s No Humans Involved has Jamie Vegas and she’s in her early 40’s along with Jeremy who I beleive is in his 50’s. It’s a favorite of mine.

  8. Grace Draven says:

Late to the party on this one, but why not?

Promo alert – I wrote a free story for Romance Divas.  Bathsheba’s Lover is about a woman celebrating her 50th birthday and the 39-year old man who celebrates with her.  It’s posted here:

Wry Hag: “Three words: Harold and Maude.  (Yeah, okay, so it’s not a book.  So stone me.)”

Actually, it is a book, written by Colin Higgins, who also wrote the screenplay.  I wouldn’t want to lay odds that he didn’t do both at the same time, since I’m pretty sure they both came out in ‘71, but it is a novel, not a novelization.

(Truthfully, I think it’s better as a movie, but that’s just IMO).

I just discovered this site and I’m so mortified that I didn’t find it sooner. I love reading the reviews and all your opinions. I’ve already found four books and I’m relieved that there’s a place I can go for book recommendations instead of slogging through the mountains of crap to find the few gems.

I’m a fan of good storytelling, period, but I gravitate towards Older Woman/Younger Man books because I got sick of reading about young idiots; eighteen and twenty-five year old women who didn’t have the brains to take care of themselves.

Heart Of The West by Penelope Williamson. Features an OW/YM story that I enjoyed—but they are secondary characters.

    The Outsider by Penelope Williamson.

One Summer by Karen Robards. Bad boy accused of murder and his former teacher is the only one who believes that he’s innocent.

Snowfire by Anne Mater. This author has a couple OW/YM stories out there (Treacherous Liaisons, Sinful Pleasures). I don’t know if I can say that they were good, but I found them very entertaining.

Sweet Memories by LaVyrle Spencer. I really liked this book, it was a very “sweet” story. It’s about a woman coming to terms with herself and her body, and along the way she falls in love.
