Feel free to laugh, taunt, mock, whatever, but I finally got my mitts on a copy of Say Anything (“I wubs you, Multnomah County Library!” she cried into the good night) and I JUST finished watching it and holy, holy shit.
On one hand: Does a romantic hero get much better than Lloyd Dobler? People, I don’t think so.
On the other hand: I feel dirty, lusting for a fresh-faced, barely pubescent John Cusack. Yes yes yes, I know he’s more than street-legal now, but Lloyd Dobler isn’t.
And on the other, OTHER hand: I feel really, really pathetic right now. Why? ‘Cause I don’t think whatserface (see? I forgot her name already) deserves him, because obviously, only I deserve him.
This is a fictional character, folks. A fictional teenage character, and I’m squeeing like a motherfucking 15-year-old who’s just creamed her panties because she saw someone who was maybe kinda sorta almost definitely Leo DiCaprio shopping at Urban Outfitters on Saturday. Plus I’m about ready to claw the eyes out of a perfectly sympathetic fictional heroine simply because she gets the (equally fictional) guy I’m all hot for. Jesus wept. Grown-up Jesus, even, and not Baby Jeebus.
I need to get to sleep. Lack of sleep makes me rambly and delusional. But be warned: I’m going to watch the movie all over again tomorrow. Do they have this out on DVD yet? Goddamn, they better.
Please, feel free to tell me how sad I am in the comments. You won’t be telling me anything I don’t know already.
Ummm, anyway, so this movie kind of sort of ties in with the whole romance theme of the website, right? Plus I think I just answered the question Sarah asked ages ago about favorite romantic movies.
The only pathetic thing is when someone DOESN’T get that Lloyd is just everything a man should be. Everything. Plus he has tips. Many, many tips, excellent tips.
And yes it’s on dvd.

I adore this movie! In fact, my friends and I saw it in the theater by accident. We were in college, so we hardly ever watched TV…thus, we saw no ads for the film. But we all loved John Cusack, that we decided to see it when we showed up at the theater.
We all were so smitten with Lloyd that we never left the theater and saw the next showing. 😉
If it makes you feel any better, John Cusack was in his mid-20s when he made that movie. So feel perfectly OK about your fantasies.

No, you’re not sad. I’m the sad one. I eventually think of Lloyd every time I meet someone. Remember that scene where he stops her from walking on the broken glass? That is part of my definition of quality (amongst other things). Lloyd is the archetype of the man-every-girl-wants, even if she can’t admit it (because only He-Man ball busters will do). *sigh* Thanks a lot, Candy. My copy of the movie is in storage, and now I’m totally jonesing for it.
Did you like him as much in “The Sure Thing”? I loved that movie too- they way he realizes what/who he really wants in right in front of him al the time…

Oh, if you loved “Say Anything” (how many copies of that Peter Gabriel song do you suppose they sold when that movie came out?), you have to watch “The Sure Thing,” which is also one of my favorite early John Cusack Romantic hero films. Directed by Rob Reiner, it isn’t as unabashedly Romantic as SA, but it has its moments.
And if it makes you feel any better, I hear John Cusack is NOT aging well.

I LOVE LLOYD DOBLER. He is everything a man should be. (“We’ll be antisocial.”) Especially the scene where he asks her if she wants anyone or if she wants him and then he shakes his head and says, “It doesn’t matter.” Sigh. Squeeeee!
Yes, Cusack was in his mid-20’s, so we don’t have to feel bad about Wanting Him. And after Identity and Grosse Point Blank I just adore him even more. I don’t care if he’s aging like Marlon Brando, he’s still totally, totally hawt.
Have to go watch Say Anything again. Hot damn. And for the record, the girl (Diane, played by Ione Skye) did NOT deserve him. The guitar-playin’ girl (CC, played by Lili Taylor) was so TOTALLY more right for him. Um, except for the fact that he’s MINE. We will have to Roumanian mud-wrestle to figure out who gets him.

John Cusack is aging just fine, as far as I’m concerned—see the trailer for “Must Love Dogs” for proof. The movie doesn’t look very good, but I must say I love the fact that he’s romancing Diane Lane in it and not someone twenty years younger (cough::Katie Holmes::cough).
I saw Say Anything, like, a million years ago and can’t remember anything except the boombox scene. I’m thinking a trip to Blockbuster is definitely in order.

::Le sigh:: Say Anything. That movie has stood the test of time so well, hasn’t it?
It makes me wonder about Cameron Crowe: this is the guy that has brought us Lloyd with the “watch out for the glass” and the boombox, and “you had me at hello”, and that scene in Almost Famous where the group sings “Tiny Dancer” on the bus. He has got to be the king of the heart-felt moment.
Of course, he also has Fast Times at Ridgemont High back there in his past. It’s all an intrigue to me.
Here’s my confession: Ducky. The Duck Man. The best dweeb-geek ever to hit the silver screen. You do know who I’m talking about?

What I remember most was the ‘first time’ scene in the car. His expression…he was trembling… Damn. I was a teen virgin when I first saw it and I got all Jell-O.
The best thing about “Say Anything” is that it spawned the number 1 makeout-slow dance song with “In Your Eyes,” and at 8th grade dances, that was The Song to dance to with the person you had a mad, gooey crush on.
And then… at the end, when you’re begging your palms not to sweat anymore because you have your arms around The Guy you’ve been mooney for for weeks and weeks and he asked YOU to dance, when the moment couldn’t possibly get more squee, there’s that weird chanting in the background. AYAYAYAYAYAAAAAAAAAAA AEEIEIEIEIEIEHAYAYAYAYAYAY!

I too love Lloyd Dobler. My boyfriend, who never saw it, actually bought it for me on DVD for my birthday or Christmas or something a couple of years ago. I like to think that my lusting after Lloyd is more nostalgic and not remotely lechy (hee).

I recently saw a South Park re-run of that episode where Wendy gets mad at Stan and breaks up with him. Stan was at a loss about what to do to get Wendy to talk to him, so somebody (I forget who) tells Stan to stand under Wendy’s window with a boombox playing ANY Peter Gabriel song.
The song that he played was “Shock the Monkey”. Awesome.
Man, I love “In Your Eyes”. I think it’s my most favorite make-out song in the whole wide world. I even like the odd Swahilian chanting near the end (okay, it’s probably not Swahili. Speaking of breaking into Swahili in the middle of songs, how about “All Night Long” by Lionel Richie? Eh, jambo-jambo!)
