Hello, I’m New To This Bandwagon

Ooooh, I don’t think I’ve ever participated in a meme before, but I simply couldn’t resist the one I found on Sara Donati’s website.

You’re stuck inside Fahrenheit 451, which book do you want to be?
I had to think about this for a second, and then it hit me: The Jungle Book. Actually, both Jungle Books, if possible. Those books had it all: adventure, comedy, pathos, social commentary, really cool characters, poetry. I have read and re-read those books a million times and I still get goosebumps when I read “Now Chil the Kite brings home the night that Mang the Bat sets free…”

Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character?
Heh, going back to the Jungle Books: as a little girl, definitely Mowgli. And, oooooh this is embarrassing, but also

Asterix. Yes, as a little girl I had a crush on a diminutive cartoon Gaul sporting a winged helmet and a walrus mustache. AndandAND, I’m not done humiliating myself yet: the second-in-command elf in Elfquest. Can’t remember his name. Silver hair, was the astrologer/astronomer guy.

I haven’t had any crushes on fictional book characters as an adult, but a few years ago I discovered Cowboy Bebop and promptly fell in love with Spike Spiegel. Don’t worry, I haven’t sunk to the level of doing shit like typing “LOL SO KAWAIIIII!!!11 ^_^ “… YET.

The last book you bought is?
I bought three books at the same time from Amazon.com: The Pirate Next Door by Jennifer Ashley, Duchess In Love by Eloisa James and Worlds Enough and Time by Dan Simmons. God knows when I’m going to get to them. I mean, y’all seen those pictures of my TBR shelves, right??

Five books you would take to a deserted island:
I HATE THESE KINDS OF QUESTIONS. Expand the list to about 50 and we’ll talk. And yes, the Jungle Books will be among them.

I loved Asterix but the mustache was such a turn-off. But I like that you have the guts to admit to such love.
One of my very predictable book/cartoon caracter loves was Alistair in Candy. Know it?

Yeah, my five were just off the top my head.

  3. Nicole says:

Oh yeah…Spike.  Love Cowboy Bebop.  I’ve watched all the episodes except the movie and have about have the dvds. But you know, I kinda like Jet too.

I had a crush on Cole Cash from the WildCATS comic.  Ahh….Grifter…hell, I still lust after that character.

Skywise!  I can’t remember his ‘soul’ name at the moment, but his Wolfrider name was Skywise and I thought he was much cooler than Cutter!  Just never could get too hot and bothered over any male who had better hair than I did.

  5. Candy says:

Arielle: Forget Asterix’s mustache—d’you see his schnoz? I mean, it gives new meaning to the term “potato nose.” But who the fuck knows what was going through my 6-year-old head? My three big loves when I was that age were Ricky Schroeder (I was a big, big fan of Silver Spoons), Andy Lau and Asterix. Of the three, I still think Andy looks eminently boinkable. Check him out: RROWR. No idea who Alistair in Candy is. A quick Google Image Search for “alistair candy” turned up some really random-looking results….

Jorie: Your restraint is to be commended. My mind started skipping all over the place when it came to the “favorite 5 books” question, going from Orwell to Kinsale to Twain to Laura London, and I thought fuck it, I’m not going to list any. Oooo-weee, lookit me buck the system!

Nicole: Jet is adorable too. But Spike is all wisecrackey and cute and tall and skinny and he idolizes Bruce Lee and… *slaps self* I have to stop talking about an anime character as if he’s real.

Callie: THANK YOU. Skywise that’s it. And yeah, besides Cutter’s unrelenting prettiness, he was such a sullen asshole too. My older brothers tried to hide the issue of Elfquest from me in which Cutter and his light o’ love do the humpty-hump, but I ferreted it out and read it anyway, HA HA. Not that my eight-year-old self understood what was going on, anyway. I remember thinking “Eeewwww, she’s sleeping with him naked. Gross” and wondering what the fuss was all about.

  6. Nicole says:

You mean Spike isn’t real?  *cry*

  7. Irysangel says:

At long last!  Another Elfquest fetish-ist!  Skywise’s soul name was Fahr, by the way (call me an excessive dork if you like for knowing that one off the top of my head).  I never cared for Cutter myself.  He spent too much time pouting or chasing after the self-important Leetah.

Now my favorite was Strongbow (speaking of assholes…)

Wow, this is such a sad conversation! 🙂

  8. Sarah says:

Dude how did I miss this entry? I am slackin’ I tell you.

Fahrenheit 451: I’d be Genesis. If someone already has that one, then I’d be Blaze Wyndham by Beatrice Small. Or the Flame and the Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss!

I’m kidding. I’d totally be a Danielle Steele.

Crush? On a character? OH HELL YEAH. I had a wicked crush on Anthony from “The Viscount Who Loved Me,” and on more than a few of Nora Roberts’ heroes.

The last book I bought… as in paid money for? Crap. I can’t remember. Oh – “She Drives me Crazy.” Meh.

And Candy is SO right. There’s no way I’d limit myself to just five. No freaking way.

  9. Arielle says:

    Dear Candy,
Google the theme from the cartoon and found a site dedicated to her:
    http://www.candyneige.com/

Also discovered it was a manga and is currently being sued over by the coauthors.

Warning: the site is entirely? in french.
But there is a clip with Alistair, my fictional first love.[sighs]
